The Hayward Gallery is full of surprises and I always enjoy the exhibitions. I have just been to the Mike Nelson exhibition with machines that are no longer in use and offices and rooms from the 70s. I was expecting a self righteous display of the end of planet earth. What a relief.

The staff were really sweet, a mention of the man who makes you place your token in the box for the exhibition especially, he is positively enthusiastic! The exhibition my friend and I visited was Mike Nelsons extinction beckons. An amazing and immersive exhibition that spans across the gallery floors. I went in expecting a room filled with sand but it was so much more then that! A must visit.

This review and rating relates to the current exhibition "Extinction Beckons" by Mike Nelson. For sure this is not your typical modern art gallery experience. Mike specialises in "installation" art and one of the key exhibits here is the maze of little rooms with connecting doors displaying collections of objects. Whilst his "art" arouses my curiosity and perhaps some amusement, I struggle to identify these displays with what I consider to be truly talented artistic productions. Can anything be considered as art ? Is art whatever a recognised artist produces ? Can there be any standards of finess and talent required for something to be deemed art. Give me the paintings in the National Gallery any day instead, and they are free to view. However, I still give the exhibition 3 stars for it's originality, but £16 is way too expensive ( to me it's worth half this) and I'm disappointed there is no pensioner discount.
