In 1954 whilst still at boarding school a 16 year old John H Haynes bought a worn-out Austin Seven and set about building his own Austin ‘750 Special’. During construction he made notes and sketches as the project grew. Eventually he had to sell his ‘750 special’ and was amazed how many enquiries he had. He used those notes and sketches in 1956 to produce a 44 page stapled together booklet ‘Building a 750 Special’ and instantly sold 250 after placing a small lineage advert in Motor Sport magazine. This was the beginning of the Haynes Manual you see today. Approximately 75,000,000 manuals later John H Haynes had established a publishing empire that allowed him to create this Museum in 1985. All based on a ubiquitous little car and its fantastic 750cc engine. The Haynes International Motor Museum has the UK’s biggest collection of cars from around the world, with over 400 motors currently on exhibit, and many more being featured in temporary special exhibitions across the year. The sheer variety of cars on show is staggering. Beautifully presented, polished and shiny. The Red Room is like a scarlet jewel of the place, the largest collection of red cars in Britain. The American road cruisers section is the cars we know and love mainly from our favorite movies, just like my childhood dream... DMC DeLorean. In addition to absolute gems, you can also see the Trabant and the Gaza M13 Chaika, the KGB's beloved car.

Absolutely love the Haynes Motor Museum - and once you've bought a ticket you can return as many times as you like which is ideal. They have a great collection of weird and wonderful cars and really shows a thorough insight into the history of the automobile. We love the monthly cars and coffee meets too, there is always a good variety and the Marshalls are really helpful upon arrival. You can buy the books in the shop too which I've often found useful when working on old cars
