Here is everything that you shoud consider before sending your child to this school. Before I begin, I would like to address that everything that is said in this review is my personal experience and it contains my own personal opinions. I thought it would be helpful for people to read this informative summary/review of this school. Being a student from this school's first ever year group, I think it is safe to say that this isn't the type of school that most people would want to send your child to. It's true, the school operates in a more abstract way in comparison to most other average UK schools, but that doesn't make it a good thing. Odd things that the school does and why it isn't effective: 1) The school has built in speakers across all corridors that play classical music after every period that comes to an end. Whilst the school claims that this is psychologically good for students as it calms their minds before entering their next lessons, most students find it highly irritating and it seems to have the opposite effect. The music is repetitive and played very loud, damaging students' ears, and it also doesn't help that they have been playing the exact same playlist of 7 songs for the past 5 years. 2) "Prep" instead of homework. Most schools in the UK provide students with worksheets that they are obliged to complete at home and then return to their teachers for marking. However, at Harris Academy Riverside there is another system known as "prep". Teachers send "prep packs" to students which contain information that they are expected to have memorised before their upcoming lessons. The idea behind prep isn't bad, but the fact is that it is not as effective as "normal" homework. This is because "prep" usually requires students to memorise 8 words and their definitions, which they are then quizzed at the beggining of the lesson. When you think about it, it is basically just a much easier version of "homework" and it doesn't teach you much. For this reason alone, every student attending the school is at a disadvantage to schools that provide proper homework, such as essay assignments, and exam style questions. The school's facilities: 1) Not a single day goes passed in this school that a student doesn't complain about the extremely small cantine. The cantine at this school is around the size of 2-3 classrooms. A classsroom is made to fit 30 students in. This means that the cantine is only made to fit 90 students. Clearly this is nowhere near sufficient for 1000 students. Their is hardly enough space to move around, and the que is always so long that it extends into the ground floor toilets. This causes many problems such as stress for students as they spend their entire lunch standing in a que waiting to purchase overpriced food. 2) No field. It is highly unusual for a secondary school to have no field. Instead, the school has a large patch of artificial grass and a concrete cage for netball. This makes the school seem prison-like and leaves many people to be bored and unproductive during break and lunch time. Many people spend their break times standing and talking to eachother about how they wish they went to another school. False promises: Throughout my experience in this school, we have had many "briefings" (assemblys) where we have been promised certain things, which never ended up happening. 1) During year 7 and 8, before we had our own school building, we were promised that the new school building which we were going to move to in year 9 would be "very big" and "bigger than Harris Academy Chafford Hundred". Unfortunately, we were all let down and dissapointed when we moved into the new building, which is basically just a 4-floor cuboid that is surrounded by noisy, warehouses and train tracks. 2) For year 11s all across the country, the last day of school is supposed to be a very special day. Students get to sign eachothers t-shirts and celebrate their 5 years of hardwork. This is what we were promised, but instead we were simply just told to leave. We were also never given an explanation why.
