I have had no alternative than to move mum due to neglect of mums basic needs when she was locked in her bedroom for just over 10 days. Mum is immobile and so as soon as I noticed she had no glasses to be able to see, no fall mat, no flat shoes on when sat for long periods as mum feels the cold on her extremities. I raised it with the deputy, pointless as when I returned two mornings later the same sight when I went into mums bedroom (although mum was able to reach her breakfast) but no drinks, treats we left and do when we go, I visit at least 3 times per week. No falls mat,no shoes, no reading glasses and it must be horrendous for mum not being able to see or get her basic needs met and paying a premium for this poor unacceptable service! I am sure prisoners would get there basic needs met but not an elderly lady with dementia and unable to walk or see! Third visit of the week? Mum was dirty, smelly and surrounded with loads of bags with tape on it and both mum and her bedroom stunk of urine! As soon as I saw and smelt this I told the staff who unlocked the door that I could not leave mum there and I then gave notice. Mum was left there for a further 5 days! Incidentally all but 4 of mums birthday presents just disappeared and my sister lives in Paignton and brought things for mum that were all suitable for mum as did I and mums grand daughters and great grandsons and extended family. The perfume tin and special musical biscuit tin were the only items that could be receipted as I was embarrassed that I was expected to go to all relatives to obtain receipts it’s totally scandalous and the new manager was not willing to check CcTV to find the person/s. No respect for mums possessions in her home! There were other issues from an over zealous unqualified member of staff who wanted mum at the hospital needlessly twice because she wouldn’t listen to what the consultant had told me and it was all due to mum going for a long period of not eating and then being hoisted and put straight in her wheelchair. On the third occasion the first day back of school I received a call from the manager with mum having the same symptoms. I could not go due to child care and I told her that someone would have to accompany mum with her dementia! On this occasion staff followed my instructions and mum was chatting and fine just like the previous two occasions but the main reason they couldn’t be bothered! Once my notice was given I visited several care homes and there were a couple that had waiting lists and so I found two that were a better fit for mum but I had no idea that the manager had other ideas and proved to be totally unprofessional and created so much unnecessary stress by misleading facts about mums needs! I found out this with less than a week for mum to leave, the manager was chasing the social services up regularly about mum being rejected and she only had a week left to leave but the social services were no longer involved as I was the official deputy. I was chased what time mum was leaving and when I asked that mum could have her lunch while we packed mums things into the suitcases. At 11.30am I received an email to say that all mums stuff was packed up by the night staff which I knew would unsettle mum seeing all of her things being touched and put into boxes. How can a manager behave so unprofessionally. We found 6 of mums jumpers shrunk to child size, two cardigans shrunk and the manager at mums new home threw them away for us. Mum is happy, clean and chatting in her new home, no more surly rude staff, Marik at the Hallamshire and appalling that the manager can get away with this underhanded treatment. By the way because I had to draw the problems higher than the manager at the Hallamshire, instead of over playing mums care needs, mum was given high praise this time and the only criticism was that the Hallamshire couldn’t meet my expectations. NO THEY DONT!

Mum moved into this care home a year ago. We had spent weeks looking at homes and this one was head and shoulders above the rest! The care has been amazing. The management team have helped mum settle in and during that difficult time helped us adjust too! The home is always spotless and the activities are second to none. So glad we found it.

Absolutely first-class care. My Uncle has settled so well due to the 24/7 care from being very frightened and confused at home but is now settled, happy and safe. The quality of care is excellent. Exceptional staff who make everyone welcome when we attend visits. My uncle has been in a few care homes and I must say this one exceeds in every way.
