I didn’t know Guy, nor did I know anyone who’d worked with him.Taking my horse 250 miles and leaving her with a stranger was a leap of faith (I did feel a bit like the mum in The Horse Whisperer). I’d seen clips online of his work with mustangs, as well as some youtube footage, but that was it. I needn’t have worried. Guy and his wife, Victoria, couldn’t have been more accommodating. I was encouraged to spend as much time learning with my horse, and because of the distance, I’d end up spending a few days at a time, following Guy about and watching him work other horses and getting lots of one to one time with my own horse. The Robertsons have a lovely B&B next door, but also glamping tents and a caravan. I’d been working on restarting my reactive mare with an well known online horsemanship subscription for three years and although we learned a lot, we were stuck. A lot of things were better, but there were still massive holes in the basics I couldn’t figure out how to fix. I ended up leaving her with Guy for 3 ½ months, and it’s the best thing I could have done for both of us. I’ve had my girl back home with me for 2 weeks now. Initially she was pretty explosive and although we managed to work through each session on a happy note, I was a little worried I wouldn’t manage to get her back to how she was at Guy’s. But, gradually, sticking religiously to “the program” (sometimes through gritted teeth) each session improved. Today was the best day we’ve had together in years. Groundwork perfect, a happy nicker as I was tacking up, relaxed and forward on a loose rein in the arena, and then a happy, curious, relaxed hack up and down the road. I know it’s a journey and that we’ll have a few bumps along the way, but Guy has given her a solid foundation, and me the tools to build on it. Not only will this help me with this particular horse, but I feel that the whole experience has improved my understanding of how to apply horsemanship principles with any other horses that may come into my life in the future. I did find it interesting seeing how many horses would come and go at Guy’s whose owners didn’t seem to be as involved in the process. I would suggest to anyone considering leaving a horse with Guy, to make as much use of one-to-one tuition as possible. You’ll get so much more out of your horse (and yourself).
