We stayed for 4 nights from the 19th of May. The staff were particularly friendly and welcoming . We enjoyed evenings around the excellent Bluthner grand piano , nice to find such an excellent instrument in a hotel . The dinners were very good and served on really hot plates with a comprehensive choice at breakfast. The gardens all around the hotel have lovely colourful displays of plants and shrubs well done to the gardeners . The pool looked super but as we had such a busy schedule we didn't mange a swim . All in all a very enjoyable stay .

I didn't stay, just visited for a meal with my Classic Car Chums. Rothwell may not be the most salubrious district in Yorkshire, but the Oulton did a passable job of shielding you from that. Once inside the service was smart and professional making you feel important. The meal service, for around 200 people was exceptional, with staff clearly on the alert for any possible failures or mistakes. Even so they managed to do this with some warmth and friendliness. The course choices were inspired, and all 200 people seemed to get each course at the same time; an exceptional feat of timing, coordination and team work.

At the outset it’s worth mentioning that without a doubt, this is a very ‘Instagrammable’ hotel and it’s easy to see why the place is a popular wedding celebration venue and popular with golfers playing the adjacent course who want a bit of luxury at the 19th hole. My wife and I booked a two night stay to ‘chill’ after a very demanding month for us both personally and were thoroughly spoiled by the staff and ambiance of the place. Good points: Clean, spacious room with a big, comfy bed (we went for a Superior room). We ate in The Calverley Grill the first night of our stay where head waiter Carlos looked after us well. Top quality food and an imaginative menu to choose from. The breakfast buffet each morning offered a wide choice that would cater for all needs and we enjoyed both day’s breakfasts. During our stay we didn’t visit The Claret Jug - located in a separate building with the golf course clubhouse, so we can’t comment on that. Nor did we sample the golf - not our thing! However, judging by the number of ‘golf parties’ staying over, golf is clearly a selling point for the hotel. We enjoyed a few swims in the small, but perfectly suitable, pool with its poolside hot-tub, steam room and sauna. Spa treatments were available, but not for us on this occasion. No complaints and it all added to our experience. The Champagne bar is worth spending a few hours in or as we did and we found our measure in the adjacent lounge and library where helpful staff members were happy to serve our drinks directly. Not so good points: Hard to think of any really, but if one is going to be finicky, given the 4 star rating and high-end pricing of everything (to be expected in a hotel like this), we found their range of draught beers/lagers available in the bar to be limited to ones we weren’t aware of and at best we found to be ‘‘okay’. No premium lagers or beers found as you would in many other places I’m afraid. Guinness was on draught but not the best pint I felt. If spirits and cocktails are more your taste then you won’t be disappointed. Added to this, we felt the hotel bar offered a very limited daytime snack/lite bites menu and there’s no pastries listed. Other 4 star hotels we’ve stayed at generally offer a wide range of afternoon snacks and pastries, so perhaps more emphasis is given to their Afternoon Teas which are visibly popular. Sometimes you just need a pastry mid-afternoon with your coffee or a bowl of fries with your pint! Generally we found the staff friendly and attentive, however some of the tables in the lounge were slow to be cleared after being used by those enjoying their Afternoon Teas. At 4 stars and above, it’s attention to detail that helps differentiate a place. Overall we had a fab experience and would stay again. We just need to pay for it now :-)

Very nice stay. Only a couple of things. I fancied trying the flavoured soda water on tap after a round of golf. That will be £9.80 sir. How can this even be remotely possible. Secondly even though we had checked out but still enjoying our last round of golf was told that our 10% discount on food and drinks after our round were no longer available.
