My two girls moved to Guildford City Swimming Club earlier this year as pool time elsewhere was extremely difficult to come by (or at inaccessible hours for young children), and the club had an outstanding reputation for the quality of its coaching. Both girls are in the pre-competitive section of GCSC's academy and have thrived since their move. The pool time is certainly there, but for such a huge club, a welcome surprise is the warmth and attention both of my children receive from the coaching staff. One of the refrains I heard before our move was that such a large club cannot focus on the individual as much as a smaller club can. This hasn't been my experience, quite the opposite, I feel both girls have been highly engaged with, are well understood, and pushed/given appropriate support as and when they need it. Specifically, above all else, the quality and attention of the coaching is exceptional, I cannot fault it whatsoever. Jan Griffiths has been extremely responsive to all my (probably too numerous!) inquiries and helped us and the coaches deal with the challenges my girls have faced adapting to a new squad and the more vigorous training schedule. While the pool time and coaching are exceptional, one downside is that it can be hard to coordinate multiple children. The club is so large that training is necessarily spread out over several pools in the Guildford area. Some are more convenient than others, and sometimes if you have multiple children, the logistics can be difficult to manage. The other downside is that it can be expensive, again particularly if you have multiple children doing many hours - though in the early academy stages, you only pay for the hours booked into to swim, so it's manageable. In summary Guildford City is a well-run, highly ambitious and dedicated swimming club. They provide a suitably challenging environment for swimmers that want it (and are capable), but also a highly effective development programme for swimmers that are less competitively minded. There is also sufficient graduation between these extremes. I have spent 10 or so hours a week watching the club in action over the past term and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to other parents looking for a high quality, supportive and challenging swim programme for their children.

While the club has a decent reputation the only thing this club is good at is chasing their fees beyond that there is no communication. My kids were swimming at the club a 2-3 times a week and suddenly, without notice, the location was moved which would have added a further 20 mins to an already 30 min travel time. We took our kids our and moved to another club as I was not prepared to have my kids endure such ridiculous travel times for swimming. Jan Griffiths has a serious attitude problem and I feel the club has zero respect for the kids or their welfare. It is also the least inclusive club focussed on only the the elite that can afford the unnecessarily high fees.
