On 13th of July 1985, Live Aid happened. I was living close to Goonhilly at the time and passed it most days. Even stopped sometimes on the way from work to chill out and sit with the rabbits. There were more rabbits than people then, and it was an open site; as was most of lovely Cornwall. Anyway we had young visitors staying with us, as was usual in this wonderful place; but they got bored with this oldies? music. The second half of Live Aid was going to be broadcast by satellite from America. I decided to take them to Goonhilly, the first place the signal from America would be transmitted into the Uk. When we arrived, the station was deserted, apart from the rabbits; as usual. I parked up and opened the door to the viewers gallery. A team of what seemed like about 4 technicians? were accepting the signals and working on them. A bank of, I think, 5 monitors, showed the viewing signal coming in from the USA; and synchronising with the sound signal. Then it was broadcast out to the UK. Magic stuff at the time. This is in my 71 year old memory bank. Make sure it's not only money that's in yours. John xxx

Google Maps review policy seems to be a lot more basic than their search algorithms are. For the record I do not and will not submit reviews under the following circumstances: 1. If I have already provided a review unless there has been a substantial passage of time since the previous review or a change that warrants an update; 2. If my visit occurred over 1 month ago; 3. If I only passed by a place and didn't actually visit; 4. If I only obtained directions to a place using Google Maps but have not actually visited the destination. After all what is the value in a fictitious review as, lets face it, Google tracks our location more efficiently than MI5 or GCHQ and should therefore know that I haven't visited the destination in question; 5. If the place in question is a chain or franchise operation that can be found in more or less the same form in many locations in the UK or indeed the world. There is little point in providing lots of detail about something people can find anywhere on their High Street; and 6. If the place is my place of work or a commercial premises that I have visited in the course of my work. This falls into one of the above categories and as such does not benefit from a review or my time in preparing one, this standard text is provided simply to dismiss Googles repeated requests for me to submit a review.

There was a festival here last month that was really good value for money. Daytime activities and good music acts in the evening. Good to see the visitor centre.

It used to be a 10 out of 10 years ago when you could visit and do the tour including explaining how they were used for live aid. And then further visits included the segway experience which was great razzing round the different dishes. But now to my dismay no chance of even getting in to see the dishes which are amazing. If it was some secret deep space e.t. search site then fair enough but it just seems from the owners comment it is just a base to transmit a rival to sky television broadcasts. It only gets a 1 due to no admission. Hopefully soon you can sort this out because its an amazing site and great it has not been demolished or left to rot.
