    My wife and I popped into Goldsmiths in Canary Wharf this afternoon (Sat. 14th May). Unfortunately, we left without being able to make a purchase. Upon entering, there was no warm opening, such as “Hello, how can we help?” or “Is there anything you would like to see?” The greeting was as quick as it was sharp: “Do you have an appointment?” Alas, no, we didn’t. Feeling suddenly guilty, I confessed the glaring lack of an arranged appointment. My hopes of a store assistant-client report following my honest response were dashed as surely as the Titanic on her maiden voyage. The store assistant was swift in directing us to the piece of scrawny A4 paper stuck on the door, whose message, he explained, warned potential customers against foolhardy attempts at entering the store with a view to spending money without the lack of an appointment. I paused, scanning my memory to recall the warning on the door. Clearly, my wife and I were culpable of a second offence by missing it. We listened for sirens; none came, so we pressed on, eager for an opportunity to engratiate ourselves to the store assistant. We looked around the store hoping to meet the friendly, encouraging gaze of other shoppers who had successfully answered the sphinx’s riddles and won safe passage into the store, free to browse and purchase with giddy abandon. Only the female assistant at the door met our pleading eyes. Not a single customer had made it through and such was to be our fate as well. The last, driving words from the store assistant to ring in our ears were, “We are not seeing any customers without an appointment.” It is hard to fault the successsful application of Goldsmith’s policy. The store assistant discharged his duty to the company with the grace of a downtrodden, mid-century valet whose remaining solace in life is chastising the boy who shines his gruff master’s shoes outside his London club. And the Omega Speedmaster (sapphire sandwich) that we wanted to pick up? Well, we will give our money to a store that wants it.

    If you have a spare hour or two ponder about here. If your on a time limit on your lunch break forget any form of customer service. Staff clueless on how to work their own system. Took 40 min to buy a single ring.
