Staffing levels are so low you have to do everyone else's job and dont have the time or equipment to do your own work, which falls behind.

This review is not about the frontline carers and nurses at Ghyll Royd who cared so compassionately and kindly for my Mum during her years at the nursing home. My concerns are with senior management. From corruptly charging our family 'top up' fees, even though she is fully funded under CHC to woefully poor communication. The appalling management has never been so evident as during the Covid pandemic. The only communication our family got routinely were sporadic brief texts with Covid death stats and updates of whether Covid was in our out of the home. When we suggested a more interactive communication forum involving staff, residents and families might be considered - at a time when we had no access to our Mum, we were stonewalled by senior managers. There has been no forward-looking or forward-thinking strategic plan for covid-safe visiting, despite us asking them their plans for the winter months in May. Indeed just this week in mid November, they are only starting to build an outdoor visiting cabin. Until then, garden visits with vulnerable older people were often in the rain and cold. They banned window visits, but were unable to tell us why - everyone knows that Covid-19 doesn't travel through glass. Care homes have had a tough time during Covid, but Ghyll Royd have done very little to help facilitate safe visiting and reassure families. I would definitely not recommend this nursing home to others. Oh and if you check the other reviews on here - many of them are from suppliers, contractors or employees of Ghyll Royd Nursing Home, and have obviously been asked to write a review. They are clearly not going to write a bad word against the nursing home who are paying for their services!

Ghyll Royd was my first care job and I can't think of a better place or people to have learnt from. The training from the management and senior carers was detailed and personal, ensuring the residents comfort and safety was priority throughout. As I have grown in confidence I have enjoyed working hard with my fellow colleagues. The residents are treated with kindness and a caring nature I will miss being part of as I move up to Edinburgh! I will be visiting whenever I can so I can catch up with the residents and staff !

My relative lives here. The carers try their best but the communication from the care home has not been good, just text messages and one or two letters which is so difficult when we're not allowed in to see our loved ones. I don't even know what happened to the previous manager, she just mysteriously 'disappeared' in the summer during a big covid outbreak, and noone told us anything. I have hardly seen my relative at all because we're only allowed to see them by standing in the cold through the window or behind a screen once a week in a new cabin they have built. Seeing my relative in this way doesn't work for us because its distressing as they have dementia and don't understand why we can't be near them. The government promised we could have tests and be able to go in amd hold our relatives hands without screens but this care home aren't doing that. I don't think they really understand or care how difficult it has been for us families.

My father was a resident of this care home for 2 years and passed away very recently. I can honestly say that this home made my fathers last two years of his life the best it could have been. The staff were very caring towards him and his needs were attended to with no effort. He was very happy in the home and this brought myself and our family much comfort. With the year that has been very challenging for all the reasons in the world, the managers of the care home and staff have been very responsive to us as a family of which we are truly grateful for. Even though we have only been able to see our father through the window, which of course was the best way to keep all the residents that live at the home safe from this dreadful virus. When father became near end of life the staff were very susceptible to his changing condition and we were able to safely visit him in the home, of again which we are truly grateful. I would highly recommend this home to anyone looking for a place to live that would like to be treated with the upmost respect and dignity, promoting choices as my father would have recommended this home every day of the week. Thank you team Ghyll Royd.

I have worked with Ghyll Royd and Group of companies for over two years. I work with the owners, Senior Management Team, Carer’s and the wider support team. The commitment and dedication across all levels is second to none! Earlier this year, the Senior Team attended the Skills for Care programmes for Well Led and Lead to Succeed with us at Essential Training. An Accredited programme that sees over 90% of attendees gaining Well Led in CQC inspections. A continuation from this programme saw the Senior Team lead on a training programme for staff working towards accredited qualifications. They truly go beyond what most companies in care achieve. The staff are amazing and so helpful, I have received great support from the management team in organising our training remotely. Nothing it too much trouble! Recently they have organised facetime and zoom meetings to enable us to support learners development through these difficult times. The Carer’s have been equally committed to their training despite the pandemic they are still all working really hard to maintain their skills and knowledge of the sector and keeping up to date on their Mandatory Training. Keep up the great work. I look forward to seeing you all soon.
