George made a beautiful 19 string triangular lap harp with an Ash frame and a birch ply soundbox. It looks stunning (contemporary yet traditional) and has a wonderful resonance. I have owned a cheap mass produced harp before this one, but frankly the difference in sound and quality of finish between the two is like comparing fizzy vinegar with champagne. The difference in price between this luthier made quality piece and a mass produced one was so negligible I would recommend anyone considering a similar harp to invest in one produced by a skilled professional. I am extremely pleased with my purchase.

I’ve now bought a harp and a gittern from George Stevens. They are both a great pleasure to play. The gittern is extraordinary. It is so responsive and resonant. I play it whenever I can, and it has given me a fresh interest in fretted instruments. One can play mediaeval music through to jazz and folk, the instrument responds so well to anything you ask it to do. If there is one great feature about George’s work, I’d say it is his eye for wood, and his meticulous selection and preparation of the tone wood. The gittern can ‘sing’ in a remarkable way.

George made the 6c renaissance lute for me in 2003. It is 16 years old now, but it has no trouble yet. George chose good materials and they make good sound. Body, made from plum, has a deep bowl which makes sweet and resonant sound. Sound board has nice fine grain. It helps to make nice sound as well. Currently I use gut strings. This lute also goes well on gut strings. You would create pianissimo sound easily with George's lute and gut. I really enjoy renaissance music with this lute. Thanks, George!

Graeme Nairn On opening the packaging, which indicated that it had been sent from Lydd in Kent, I immediately realised that this was one of the cleverest things I had ever done. Inside, nestling in a bed of green velvet was the most beautiful eight course Renaissance lute, crafted to a level I couldn't have imagined. The pleasure I have derived from this instrument is incalculable and is entirely due to the consummate artistry and professionalism of George Stevens.
