George Peabody is referred to as the “father of modern philanthropy.” An American who had strong British ties. Before he turned to philanthropy, Peabody was a notable merchant banker. Headquartered in London, he channelled desperately needed European and British capital into promising ventures in the United States. It is believed that Peabody gave away about $8 million of his $16 million fortune within his lifetime. Peabody’s generosity was hailed as an example for his contemporaries, and later generations of philanthropists have continued to invoke it, with the latest being Bill Gates and Warren Buffet who often cite Peabody as their inspiration.

Nice to see a monument to someone who was dedicated to using his privilege for good. The statue was bigger than I expected, and there are places to sit near it. Definitely wheelchair/mobility device accessible spot. Kind of a chaotic area, but worth a visit.

An American Banker, Freeman of the City of London and foremost philanthropist residing in Victorian London, honoured as a vociferous proponent and crucial provider of mass social housing for the “labouring poor.” Astonishingly many of his innovative and sturdy projects still survive as does the commendable “Peabody Trust” charity that he founded. This unprepossessing bronze, unveiled in his lifetime and shortly before his death in 1869, unquestionably deserved... and deserving of your brief glance and acknowledgement.
