I recently completed the RYA Day Skipper practical course with First Class Sailing (FCS) in April 2023. Five days on their boat with the Skipper and two other students (this felt like an optimal class size). It was excellent and aligned squarely with the FCS recommendation I’d received from a friend: a very capable organisation with kind people. I found the course challenging and was quite satisfied with how the Skipper ensured that each day was made varied and full with instruction, drilling, and just living on the boat. The FCS Skipper was evidently a very capable sailor and, perhaps more importantly, very capable at sailing instruction. I think this was key. This was a serious course administered by what I found to be a serious (and good natured) Skipper backed by a serious organisation. I think that those who may not take as well to teaching instruction may find the experience more challenging. The sailboat was in top shape, clean, and comfortable. We ate well. All but one evening meal (which we shared together at a fine marina restaurant in Lymington) were on the boat. The food lockers were stocked with variety and quality (raw materials for meals we prepared together, ready to eat meals (pizza, quiche) for when convenience was more appropriate, and plenty of English snacks…notably biscuits). Tea and coffee was in ample supply. The FCS menu was satisfyingly well considered and measured. In the run-up to the course I found the FCS administration responsive and helpful. This was particularly useful as I reside abroad and travelled specifically for the FCS course. I had previously completed the FCS RYA Day Skipper theory course on-line (again, I found the instructor very capable). I’m hoping to partake in an FCS organised passage (to log more hours and sailing experience) and plan to move to qualify for RYA Coastal Skipper with FCS. All-in-all I’ve had a very good experience with FCS. I would recommend.

Cruising Instructor Course I booked at short notice and the communication and logistics were handled professionally by the office staff. The course itself was on a lovely well founded vessel and the onboard catering provided was good. The Instructor Trainer was enthusiastic and very experienced at teaching and coaching and all the candidates benefited greatly from this and I was particularly pleased that the effort put in by the Instructor Trainer and the candidates during the week was rewarded with all the candidates passing the independent assessment at the end of the course. First Class Sailing get a big thumbs up from me.

Expert and patient instruction on the unique and charming Golden Vanity. Such a gorgeous boat and good catering too! Huge thanks to Skipper Ross Brady and First Mate David. Very well thought through training with lots of chances to practice and breaks to reinforce learning. Wonderful to explore the Solent and moor up and anchor in new places. The whole team at First Class Sailing are friendly and helpful. From first contact, they gave me excellent support and advice. I’m delighted that I completed my RYA Competent Crew with them last week and can not wait to learn more and get back on board. Let’s Go Sailing!

I signed up for the 2-day yacht electrical and marine course. O own my own boat and wanted a better understanding of electrics and how I could self diagnose and where appropriate fix. Course was excellent. Clear instrcution, professionally delivered, with excellent practical hands on experience. Small group of 10 people was ideal. Highly recommended.

I attended two courses between Friday and Sunday. The first course was Boat Rigging and Rope Splicing and the second course was Boat Electrical and Electronics. In the first course we received very practical and valuable information about the safety checks and wear /tear inspections of a typical sailing vessel’s standing as well as running rigging. This is extremely important as it might mean a safe passage versus a catastrophic one not to mention a very costly outcome unless one is diligent about it. Then there was a very useful and fun part which was rope splicing. It was a hands on and guided tuition at the end of which we did three different types of rope splicing. The point of this was to understand the basic principles of splicing and be able to practice more by following some YouTube videos or books. I very much benefited from it. The second course was on boat electrics. In two days we covered all the basic elements of a boat’s electrical and electronic systems. Again it was partly theory but mostly practical as the instructor went through everything from shore power to internal wiring, connections, potential hazards, NMEA networking etc. We made crimps, connections, fault finding, installing units to the fuse box and electronic panel, setting up gps units etc. For both courses, the instructors were extremely knowledgeable, patient and were able to explain topics to all levels of attendants. I highly recommend these courses and First Class Sailing in general (I took the Diesel Engine course from them years ago) for anyone who wants to be self sufficient, or at least communicate better with technicians that they call in for repairs or fault finding.
