Lovely little church. Dates back to the 7th century. Most of the stones used to build Escomb Church are from Vinovia, the Roman fort at Binchester, County Durham. There is a stone with the inscription on it, which reads "LEG VI" upside down meaning 6th Legion.

Escomb Saxon church built in 675 and. The oldest of four thats remaining in England and one of the first Christian churches in the kingdom of Northumbria.. built with stones from bincester Roman fort, the north wall has a inscribed Roman stone with leg v 11 carved in. Set encircled by a stone wall and the road of Saxon green ,like a oasis among the modern day houses this lovely church with its whitewashed internal walls is well worth the visit
