I only had 1 lesson with 1 instructor at Drive Johnsons so I'm sure this is not reflective of the whole driving school. However, the 1 lesson I had was absolutely shocking. I called Drive Johnsons to enquire about doing an intensive course and thankfully I asked to have a 1 hour lesson before paying hundreds for the intensive course as was asked of me. For this 1 hour lesson, my instructor was 20 minutes late. He texted me 5 minutes before my lesson started asking if I lived in the next town over, I replied no and resent him my address. This didn't come across as very professional to me. However, I wouldn't have even minded him missing 1/3 of the lesson if he was willing to make up for the lost time at the end of the lesson (I had paid for an hour, after all). This was not the case, so I effectively had a 40 minute lesson. My instructor didn't have a learner driver sign on his roof and instead just stuck some L plates on the car before I got in. This rang alarm bells in my head but I decided to give this the benefit of the doubt. Then during the lesson my instructor took me to residential road to assess what I already knew. The road he chose was a winding one with cars parked on both sides, so I didn't feel comfortable going up the gears. Also, he would ask me to pull up on the left when there was very little space between two cars already parked on the road. As a new driver (which I had communicated to him many times both prior to and during the lesson), I was not used to squeezing in such tight spots. I raised this but the instructor said he wanted me to get used to driving on roads in realistic situations. He also kept mentioning that his philosophy is to take things slow - sadly I didn't have much time to play with, hence why I had enquired for the intensive course! Following this, he asked me to do a right turn into a minor road. I did this perfectly. However, because he didn't know the area at all and because he wasn't using a sat nav/map, he had actually led me into dead end. We then wasted 15 minutes doing a 5 point turn in a really tight gap with other parked cars near us (I couldn't do it in 3 points as I am a novice driver). However, I was rather annoyed that I had missed the first 20 mins of my lesson cos he was late, and then missed a further 15 minutes because of his poor planning in terms of what roads to take me down. This effectively means that I paid for 60 minutes of a lesson and only got 25 minutes (where I spent most of my driving in gear 1 due to the type of road he took me down). To top it all off, this lesson took place during the pandemic and so both learners and instructors are required to wear masks. My instructor did wear a mask, but anytime he wanted to speak to me he would remove it. Absolutely defeats the purpose of the mask wearing! The entire experience was a waste of an hour and of my money. I'm sure Drive Johnsons are a great company with great instructors but I feel they need to vet their instructors more in future to prevent this level of unprofessionalism. My advice would be to always do a 1 hour lesson with the instructor to see if you work well with them before paying for block bookings etc!
