In summary: Dean at Gemini Bespoke Knives is a consummate professional. He will have a candid discussion with you about the work you want done, all bases will be covered, and he will produce exemplary results. His skill, attention to detail and infectious passion for his craft shined through from our first email exchange all the way through to the final product. After exchanges with 14 smiths, I chose to send my knives overseas to Dean for work due to his broad expertise and effective communication. Full review: I collect antique cleavers, and purchased an 8 inch Foster Bros cleaver in rougher shape for a song at a local antique shop. The blade was corroded, the bolster loose, the blade rusted against that loosened bolster, and the tang had corroded and scales warped such that there were small gaps between the scales and handle. I wanted to have this cleaver refurbished for kitchen use, rather than to display it with the rest of my collection. I wanted the majority of the blade cleaned up without removing the patina, the edge resharpened, the rust under the bolster cleaned and the bolster attached firmly once again. I also hoped to have the gaps between the scales and handle addressed. In my discussions with Dean, he outlined a plan for achieving the goals I had for the job, explaining exactly what he would be doing. Dean was also able to take out the rivets and remove the original wooden handle scales (by my reckoning dated to before 1940) and was able to refurbish them and attach them with his own rivets, bringing a bit of his personal style to the old piece. In our discussion Dean was transparent about how removing such old scales intact was no guarantee, and we worked out pricing and details for replacements if necessary. Every step of our conversation was clear. Dean took on the challenge with that in mind and succeeded beautifully. The old blade shows its history, and it’s ready for another century of use. It shall be an heirloom of my family, and it will be helping me feed that family and many friends for the rest of my days. When Dean sent the package back to my residence in the US, he packaged it securely, with no wobble possible, and no extraneous space used. Dean’s keen attention to detail extends to every aspect of his work and his business; he is a consummate professional. As long as Dean wants to be in business, he has my business.

Excellent work; asked Dean to repair a knife that I had actually thrown away as the handle snapped off, thought someone would be able to repair it. I found Dean and he did it for a great price, and it looks fantastic and cuts better than it ever had. Anytime I need a knife repairing or buying a new one I'm coming here.

He was creative, patient and a total joy to deal with - top-service from a top-guy! Clearly highly skilled and capable of undertaking unusual one-off pieces and creating amazing results!
