Beautiful place to stay. Beds are so comfortable and it is so quiet and peaceful. Had the windows open all night. Breakfast was amazing, so was the service from Nik (Nikki), she was so helpful and pleasant to chat to. Only downside was having to leave. Wish we could have stayed longer! Beautiful surroundings and a great location. Rooms : 5/5 | Service : 5/5 | Location : 5/5 … More

Hmmm where to start. Well I'll have to give a completely honest review and hope that feedback is taken on board. This place is not a hotel. It is a place that the owners who reside on the premises, have decided to let out 5 rooms. I had asked for nice room with views, and was given a room with views of the front car park instead of the rolling hills to the side and the back. It was interesting to watch the staff bring all the food from an external barn to the restaurant and Orangery at the back. Clearly Downham Hall lacks an onsite kitchen, the pathways look a bit treacherous with mud and gravel and the staff did a marvellous if precarious balancing act laden down with afternoon teas and plates The place is very compact. There are no communal lounge areas. The entrance is a hallway with a tiny bar / reception stashed under the stairs. Upon arrival we were greeted with the lovely sounds of a pianist / singer in the hallway, which was a lovely touch I thought. I also loved the flowers and cardboard popup stand of Charles and Camilla, to celebrate the coronation. We were placed in the very front room upstairs called 'Ramsay' above the entrance. The room is an L shape with a small compact ensuite shower, no bath. The room smelt terribly of sewage as there were issues with the septic tank and power cuts on the premises so we opened both the windows. We then tried the expresso machine (which only had 1 pod - although their website shows 3 pods. For a room with 2 people, who stocks only 1 pod?!) however the machine was broken. After running down to inform reception, a gentleman came up and couldn't get it to work either, so kindly offered to make a coffee fresh, which was gratefully received. He did say he would swop out the coffee machine with a working one, but when we returned in the evening, the broken one was still there We only stayed one night on the Saturday of the Coronation weekend, and estimated around 20-25 short power cuts as the bathroom was plunged into complete darkness. Thank goodness we were able to use the torches on our phones! I ventured outside to wander in the garden and there were areas that did smell strongly of sewage In the evening, note that the stairs are very creaky and you can hear everyone marching up and past your room. Most things I could forgive but I have to say I didn't sleep a wink as the lights outside lighting the pathway and the entrance were on all night and very strong and beaming through the windows. The curtains in our room were NOT blackout and let a lot of light through. Quite unbelievable that this was the case, and surely this must be remedied by the owners. I have never experienced this before - please don't scrimp on this, surely blackout lining is cheap as chips these days?! Still the next morning, undaunted, I was looking forward to a full English, only to be informed that the gas was off, so no eggs, or baked beans were possible and they were only serving a limited menu. Surely this must be the stay from hell I thought, and someone was having a good laugh! Still, what was served at breakfast was delightful and we made do with a lovely assortment. I really must commend the cook / chef as every bite was so flavoursome. I enjoyed a piece of sausage , bacon, tomato, mushroom, avocado and salmon, with toastand a lovely glass of fresh orange juice. So to sum up, the room was OK, the staff were delightful but the core elements of the stay were sadly lacking. Would I stay again? Possibly, but I wouldn't be staying in the Ramsay room again! To the owners who are reading this, please get it sorted. You are close to being good but let down on a number of crucial factors, some of them very easily remediable Otherwise I'd choose another hotel in the area but come back for breakfast, to try out the full English. Overall a rather disappointing stay - c'mon Downham Hall, you can up your game! Update: the owners never once introduced themselves. A true hotelier puts hospitality at its core. They do not personally attack customers. Oh dear! Another star deducted 😳

We visited for a friend's wedding. The venue was an old house which is a nice setting. The reception was held in a marquee, which didn't have enough heating, the floor in the marquee was dangerous, a wedding quest actually hurt his ankle were the floor gave way. The food was mediocre at best, the staff serving were miserable, we nicknamed one Miss Trenchbowl, she was very unpleasant to the guest. I personally wouldn't hire it, the reception I thought ruined what was a lovely day. If you as a business can't take criticism then you are in the wrong game, and I was being kind to 'miss Trenchbowl' she was rude to our table, my fellow guests wanted to complain there and then, it's only because it was a friends wedding they didn't. It's a wonder you are still in business the service you provide now doubt at a huge price as well. I only review as I see it, and I haven't even given 87 reviews, don't know where you got that from, maybe you should train your staff to do their job and take constructive criticism

We attended my sister in laws wedding last Friday 14/04/23 and what a lovely venue Downham Hall is. From walking in your made to feel welcome by all the staff plus the building is so homely. The whole day was faultless with special mentions to Liam, Jess and Deborah who came up to me asked for my phone then vanished with it, so funny but it was for a good reason. The food was delicious the servers so polite and nice, I could go on how great this place is but the highlight was Jess singing to one of the songs during my daft music quiz, she was great. Our room was perfect we slept like logs and breakfast was again delicious, garlic on the mushroom at breakfast was interesting lol. All in all superb and I hope we have the opportunity of returning one day. Noteworthy details: The staff without fail we’re all excellent
