Lina “Autlina” Eckford
When I came to GP, I explained that I’m autistic. It’s a common autistic trait — when someone or something distracts you, it’s difficult to return to the task. Autistic people often have problems with short-term memory, so it could be very difficult to do something if someone constantly interrupts you. I explained that I will try to explain my problem as shortly as possible, but that problem is complicated, so that could take time. She constantly interrupted me from the beginning, so I told her that I will explain what I want and then we could talk about it. But she kept interrupting me through my story again and again, so I asked her if I need to come another day when she will has more time for me. She told me to continue. I continued, and she did not stop — she interrupted me again and again. When I wanted to explain the scientific part of my question, she interrupted me again, and I couldn’t explain. Then she started to ask more questions, and I understood she even did not listen to me. She tried to give me sertraline and try to explain me that a higher dose of citalopram is good for me. I had SSRI-induced apathy. I struggled with severe problems because of it. I can’t take SSRI because it causes apathy, and I explained and even WROTE AND SHOWED to her that my apathy became WORSE when I rise the dose. She didn’t listen. I tried to discuss researches about the usage of milnacipran for depression, and she just asked me to copy that name and interrupt me — I needed just 1-2 minutes to explain my point about SNRI. She interrupted me again and again, so I couldn’t even ask her about other SNRIs which was licensed for depression. She repeated again her “Mirtazapine, Amitriptyline, Sertraline” as if she didn’t know that other antidepressants exists. I think she really doesn’t know much about antidepressants — so why she couldn’t listen or at least open the NHS website? It contains information about SNRIs, trazodone, and MAOIs. I was so shocked that she was not willing to discuss at least venlafaxine, so I even couldn’t try to speak about SRNIs again. My partner was with me at the doctor, and they told me that they had never seen a doctor who are so unwilling to listen and treated a patient like a silly child. After that, I just took my phone and called to private GP — I’m an asylum seeker, and I don’t have money for it, but I had to go to a private GP. We discussed my problems. She didn’t interrupt me all the time. So we decided to try SNRI. I asked for duloxetine. She thought that venlafaxine might be better. I explained that researches show that venlafaxine has a much greater affinity for the serotonin transporters than for norepinephrine and, in low doses, acts like SSRI. Duloxetine is still much more selective for serotonin, but at least it could also raise norepinephrine. It might be better for a person who has SSRI-induced indifference. She agreed with me, so I’ve got my duloxetine. It all took no more than 15 minutes because she wasn’t so arrogant and pretentious. She didn’t try to feed her ego by playing boss. She just listened to me and asked me about things she didn’t know. Benjamin Franklin said, “Being ignorant is not so much a shame as being unwilling to learn”. So I don’t see any problem in that doctor doesn’t know much about antidepressants — she’s just a GP, not a psychiatrist. The great shame is that she doesn’t want to listen, doesn’t want to ask, and doesn’t want to educate herself about autism. I had some speech problems even in my native language until my 20s. Of course, I have language problems in English. I still struggle with expressing my thoughts in words, I have awful short-term memory, and I just forget all that I want to say if someone interrupts me — I still have this problem even in my native language. It doesn’t mean I’m stupid. It’s difficulties that many autistic people have. Please send this person to some courses about autism and medical ethics. If she doesn’t want to educate herself, maybe someone else could try to help her do it before she harms any autistic person.

This review is based solely on the experience with the receptionist and is not a reflection on the care provided by healthcare practitioners. Yes, this is yet another in a string on complaints regarding this practise' receptionists poor behaviour towards the public. The lady in question acted incredibly arrogantly and rudely towards someone wishing to sign up for the practise. She was interrogating people about their backgrounds and living situations and other personal details that are absolutely none of her business - not only this but actually going out of her way to dissuade someone who is an immigrant and new to the area from accessing the healthcare that they have a full right to is very ignorant behaviour. Shame on this lady. It's a real stain on the reputation of this practise, which I have been going to since I was a child, when I know that the actual GPs who work here are committed to giving the kindest and best care they're able to. The receptionists are not representing the practise in a professional and courteous manner and it's long overdue for this issue to be addressed.

I have been a patient at this surgery for quite a few years. I am very invested in my health as I have had a severe medical condition since the age of 13 years. Due to failure of duty from the doctors at this surgery and misdiagnosis I was finally diagnosed in 2014 in my early thirties during a hospital surgery. Unfortunately this was to late and I lost my fertility through multiple major surgeries. This has all deeply affected my mental health and quality of life. I have cried to a number of doctors at this surgery pleading for help only to be given medication reluctantly and left to suffer on my own accord. My medical records prove my conditions have worsened along with the severe emotional distress due to failure of doctors duties to me as a patient, this includes leaving my conditions to progressively worsen over long periods. I have been advised by many professionals including the Police to complain and move surgery when I relayed this back to the doctors they were all the more happy for me to move surgery knowing it would only cause me further issues and distress given the status of my poor health. Last straw was yesterday when I spoke to a new inexperienced doctor who I did not ask to speak to, who was condescending and rude and refused to treat me as I had tried all the options this doctor suggested over these past 9 months when first speaking to another doctor of this particular medical issue. I really did not want it to come to this but after all the suffering and damage to my health that could have been avoided regardless of the atrocious appointment system aside, I will now contact the CCG, GMC and also seek legal help. I am ashamed doctors that have known you for years and known the details of your traumas and serious medical issues show no care or concern.

I really need to speak to my GP and haven't been able to book an appointment yet as every day I called over the past week (right at 8:30 am and was usually put through before 8:50 am), I was told to call back another day because the appointments were all gone! The receptionists ask the reason for the call and if they think it is not urgent they will ask you to call back another day. The last time I called, I tried to explain to the receptionist that I really needed to speak to my GP and that I was not able to get through for days, and her response was " WE DON'T HAVE ANY APPOINTMENT LEFT, FULL STOP!"

The reception lady showed no care, sympathy and one bit of respect to patients! Worst experience in Sheffield so far! Terrible and just awful!
