First impressions are usually long lasting and mine could not have been worse. Arrived in pouring rain with a large parcel of laundry for my wife from her long stay at Salford Royal. Forced to park my car in a side street as all unit parking was taken. Knocked for entry as door mechanism was not working. Someone opened for me and immediately disappeared. I had no idea what to do, was soaking wet and just collapsed onto a bench and sobbed my heart out. It was all too much. I was observed by four heads looking at me from the glass box opposite who did absolutely nothing. An orderly passed by and I had to ask for help to see my w. I am still less than overwhelmed by her experience at Devonshire House where qualified staff still appear more interested in computer screens in that glass box than in any concerned family member or the patient.

This is a really lovely, friendly place. I was here for about 6 weeks recovering from spinal surgery and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and cheerful. I am very grateful for everything they all did for me to try to get me back on my feet.

They are currently looking after my son after spinal surgery. There seems to be a variety of patients here and it’s less of a hospital setting. Ideally spinal surgery patients would be best suited in a dedicated spinal unit, but you have to go with what’s offered. The staff are not all of the same caring ethos and this can and does create some major problems for some patients. A 24 year old autistic person should not be asked about going to bed at 6.20 p.m. obviously they are going to say yes as they think it’s what they should do. It certainly needs a shake up in autism awareness and respect and dignity. I emphasise this is NOT all staff, but it only take one bad apple. Visiting currently through the window but that’s better than no visitors when he was in hospital.

I went in to the devonshire 3 weeks ago having lost the use of my legs as a consequence of cauda equina and newly diagnosed FND. The staff couldn't have done enough to help and I arrived home today walking with crutches. That was my ultimate aim and hard work on both sides has paid off. Can't praise them enough.

I owe this unit my life. The patience and professionalism of the staff allowed me complete my rehabilitation and return to a semblance of normal life. Despite my injuries and inevitable effect on the trajectory of my life, I owe my return to 'normality' to these people. Thank you.
