Loved it here! Lovely, friendly lady who didn’t mind me browsing and was very helpful. I didn’t spend much (got a bargain book and a postcard) but was treated as well as anyone. Highly recommended to support local business. Thank you!

They ask you to put single use plastic gloves on when you enter. Which seems to me, completely out of touch and a huge waste. Terrible.

Wasn't able to enter as we didn't want to put on gloves. Why on earth do you need gloves? Bizarre gate at the front of the shop, totally unwelcoming.

Very unfriendly and unhelpful staff. To busy having a conversation to notice customers, let alone help them out. I will always shop local if I can but won't be going there again.

Absolutely bizarre experience. Wanted to buy some children’s books and support an independent book shop but found that you have to wait behind a gate to be interrogated before entry and then they demand that you wear non biodegradable toxic plastic gloves. Disgusting waste of resources and totally overbearing totalitarian authoritarianism. Felt like I’d been transported into some kind of 1984 style greater good alternate reality. Thankfully I wasn’t with my children as I would have been horrified they would have been exposed to this kind of unhealthy indoctrination. I just wanted to buy a book. An unpleasant experience at best.

Interesting books, interesting owner. Worth calling in just to peruse, lovely building outside with some ghost signs. A Devizes establishment, hopefully!

I don’t understand how this shop has gotten so many positive reviews during Covid. When you walk in you have to put on these massive plastic gloves that make irritating and loud crinkly noises when you move. They ask whether you are just browsing (for a survey? Why do they need to know?) and then finally you can come in. I always check revue before going to a place I have seen online first but I thought maybe the one negative review was a fluke. The owner of Devizes Books replied that gloves are better than sticky hand sanitiser (what have they been using? Hand sanitiser isn’t sticky?) but I should think that these huge crinkly plastic gloves are worse as you can’t even open the books! I like flipping through the pages to get a feel for the writing style but I couldn’t open the books as I was worried I would rip them! On the subject of the books, there is not a great selection and it seems that customers or the shopkeepers have been neglectedly handling them as the covers were bent upwards and damaged. I felt watched throughout the whole experience and I felt pressured to buy something but I ended up getting so stressed that they were looking over my shoulder that I had to leave. Also in this time my hands started feeling itchy and I realised I had gotten a rash. I usually get these as I have sensitive skin but I hadn’t been in any other shops so I supposed it must have been from the gloves - a painful two hours. They might have anti-bac’d the gloves with spray maybe? If not I am sorry for the mistake. Overall I would never come here again, even after Covid has died down ( I am not complaining about the gloves because I am anti-Covid-anti-Mask - I wear a mask in every shop without having to be asked even without restrictions) because the selection and layout of the shop is not good and the staff kept watching me.

I lived in Wits for almost twenty happy years, until I retired to Scotland twelve years ago. The owner of the Devizes Bookshop became a friend almost from day one of my stay in Wilts, and even to this day, though now living many miles away, I look nowhere else tp buy a new book, or to seek advice about books generally. The dedication of the owner to her profession, the efficiency with which she runs her business, and above all her friendliness at all times, is second to none. May Devizes Books continue to grow from strength to strength!

Very helpful and willing staff. Good to support a local shop rather than large online suppliers.
