Just returned from a 5 day break here....gorgeous setting but hotel was very tired and slightly grubby! Our coach party seemed to be shoved out by the "golfers", every morning there was a wait for eggs, bacon etc, which was often lukewarm when it eventually came. Food not hot at all, had to ask every evening for after dinner coffee. Beautiful flower arrangements on entrances to dining areas and bars....threadbare and badly fitted carpets on the main stairs and corridors with constant bang bang from 7am from Bob the Builder on the top floor. Basically a "look beneath the surface" hotel. The 2* are for the young waiting staff who looked like they couldn't wait to get out of the place!!

Booked a round of golf on the Mathern Course online with no issues for 3 people costing £105. I received a call on the evening before my round informing me that my round has been cancelled to to the poor conditions of the course. I frantically tried to book another course but due to the time of day I was unsuccessful and therefore could not play. Very poor service and booking system. No hint of any compensation or booking me on the other course for their mistakes. Poor show St Pierre.

Lovely hotel even if you do not play golf. Set in beautiful Welsh grounds. Stones throw from England. Bar food was to be desired, I had 2 meals, my first was a pizza with a thin ish crust, and about 16 inch. The tomato sauce on the base was tasteless. Topping ok. Breakfast was nice, hot or cold options. Plenty there. My second meal was a cheesy garlic pizza, lovely and a burger and chips. The salad on the burger was so cold, thus turning my burger cold. Burger was tasty. I was in room 102, a building just to the right of the hotel entrance. It was a three floor building, if you have walking up stairs issue, please mention this on booking. Room was clean and tidy, full tea and coffee, fridge and ironing board and iron. Hair dryer too not that I needed it. Large tv in room also. Free WiFi. Bathroom towels nice a thick, plenty of hot hot water. I put a do not disturb sign in my door as I was working nights, thus sleeping during the day. The cleaner knocked on my door twice, then opened it even thou the chain and sign was on, then proceeded to call the room phone. Why have a sign if they do not adhere to guest requests. This was not just my room, it happened to 3 of my fellow night shift guys. They where also quite loud in the corridor. Please do not see my bad point as a reason not to stay. Everyone has a different experience where ever you go. Worth going as it is Gods country.
