As an adult learner looking to play a very loud instrument, I needed to find a teacher who was patient and able to put me at ease, especially when I was fearful of making terrible noises at the start! Dan is great - his understanding and experience of playing and teaching really helps to explain things and to help me overcome my difficulties. I'm still learning the basics, but unlike some other teachers who are just lazy and can't even remember what was covered in the previous lesson, I feel he is taking the time and effort to help me build a strong foundation and to avoid bad habits. He gives me "homework" which is relevant and effective, and always seems prepared and interested in my development. It's a 30 mile round trip for me and I know there are closer teachers, but Dan's lessons are definitely worth it. I would honestly recommend him to anyone who needs decent lessons in trumpet (or trombone of course!)

I have been having trumpet lessons with Dan now for around 9 months. All my lessons have been done via Zoom, he's even got me through a grade 3 exam remotely! He is very precise and helps you take a mindful approach to get the best out of your playing and sound quality. Overall a great musician and teacher, which shines through even on a computer screen!

I always look forward to classes with Dan because of his professional and thoughtful teaching style. I took up the trumpet a few years ago, and to get me off the mark my wife bought me two lessons with Dan. That meeting proved to be the start of a wonderful learning experience, which has helped me make significant progress towards my personal brass goals. I have always found Dan to be a champion for the joy of both playing and teaching music. He takes every opportunity to encourage a practical and theoretical understanding of your instrument and the music. He is particularly keen on ensuring the basics are established early and refreshed with regular practice. I find it encouraging to see Dan follow his own advice of “practice makes perfect”!

Dan's teaching is excellent and is tailored to my goals. In my first 2 years with Dan I passed grade 1 and 2 and was at a sufficient level to join a local training brass band. Dan is very professional in the way he carries out his lessons and business administration. He is flexible with lesson times. He's also a really nice friendly bloke!
