There's most likely been a bridge across this part of the River Mersey since Roman times as the current A56 tracks the route of the Roman road between Chester and Manchester. The bridge here in 1745 was blown up or pulled down during the Jacobite rebellion when Bonnie Prince Charlie's Scottish army arrived in Manchester. The current Crossford Bridge is a Victorian iteration. The Mersey River has long been a major border between lands such as between the ancient Saxon Kingdom of Mercia to the South and Northumbria to the North. It was also once the boundary between Lancashire and Cheshire until some fella in a suit decided that both riverbanks are now in Greater Manchester. Plenty of folk in Sale and it's surrounds still put Cheshire on their address.
