I had booked well in advance (2 months) a lunch for myself and 16 friends, our orders placed and confirmed. I started to worry when only 2 days before our meal we were told that the menu had changed, ok so I managed to amend 4 of the meals, and cancel 2 desserts, we end up with 17 main courses no starters, no desserts a straight forward lunch. May 26th arrives we are all seated by 1pm our allotted time, drinks are ordered no problem.............. we wait, we wait, we wait. After half an hour I enquire, as no one has shown a face, to be told it should not be long, same result after 3/4 of an hour. The whole time no one has been to ally our fears re the delay, we get to 1 hour and at last some of the meals start to appear, it takes 11/4 hours to receive 17 meals. There were 8 different meals 9 of them being Fish & Chips, none of the meals really taxing in preparation, I'm a retired chef having worked over 40 years in many different venues serving 50 covers in some and 2500 in others, our meals should not have taken over an hour to arrive. We hardly heard one word of apology, and the cherry on top was the bill, which was completely incorrect being charged for a bottle of wine in one instance when a glass was ordered. The only positive note ( thus the 2 stars) is the majority of meals were good although the Cross Keys pie came with plenty of pastry but little minced beef and kidney. I stand to be corrected.

Not so sure about this place. Service was nice but quite poor (waiters not able to advise on beers etc); the food wasn't the best and portions were rather small (£18 for the smallest portion of fish and chips I ever had). In general, not bad but definitely not great. Service : 2/5 | Location : 4/5 … More

Called up to book last minute and managed to get the last available room. The staff were really friendly, the room was huge and had great facilities (bath, shower, selection of tea, proper coffee machine). Breakfast was included and cooked to order. Full English was superb! I would definitely recommend if you're in the area, I would also recommend booking in advance to guarantee a room, I think I got lucky getting on last minute.

Popped in for some Ales, cosy rustic village pub. Food smelled and looked good. Unfortunately had no time stay and eat.

Rooms: The historic feel along with modern comforts Nearby activities: My brother lives in Saffron Walden, so I’ve had the opportunity to do lots of things in and outside town: market days (Tu/Sat), Audley End (concerts!), Bridge End Garden, SW Museum. Outside town: Cambridge, Anglesey Abbey, and of course only 1:10 from London. Walkability: A stone’s throw from the market square, and my brother’s house ;-) Food & drinks: Plentiful food and drink options prepared with care
