I was looking for a cheap but reliable car in which to undertake a charity road trip from the UK to The Gambia in West Africa and determined that an older Mercedes C Class was best suited to my needs as they have an excellent reputation for reliability and are regularly pressed into service as taxis in each of the 44 Countries I’ve visited / worked in Africa. So I began my search in ernest as I wanted to acquire the car and give it the equivalent of a shake down cruise to identify what needed fixing before setting off on my trip as there would not be any support vehicles or mechanics accompanying us. I had a budget of £1000 and found what looked like the ideal car for sale at Connaught Motor Company in Walthamstow so made a call to owner Graham Seekley and arranged to view the following day. Graham was totally up front and advised that she had a bit of rust bubbling on the the front wheel arches but that she was solid and otherwise in remarkably nice condition and drove like a new car. On arriving at the address which is behind a car wash I met with Graham and we took the Mercedes for a test drive. The car was exactly as he described, drove superbly and even though she was 23 years old everything still worked as it should. The air conditioning was ice cold, the cruise control worked and the automatic gearbox changed gears smoothly. Her previous owners had obviously looked after the interior and kept on top of the mechanicals. Since electronic data records of past MOT’s started being recorded in 2006 she has passed each and every one without any advisories. Needless to say I brought the car and arranged to pick her up a few days later. That was a month ago and since then the car has covered in excess of 1000 miles and continues to perform faultlessly.On a recent round trip to Manchester I covered 510 miles on a tank of petrol and the low fuel light still hadn’t come on. According to my calculations she did 40mpg on that trip which is aligns with the published fuel economy for my car. In my experience you can buy with confidence from Connaught / Graham. He gave me an honest appraisal of the car and it continues to live up to expectations.
