Once a car park, it has now being transformed into a brilliant public realm with artworks, seating areas, trees, story-telling area, and attractive colourful floorings. It becomes a favourite civic space for locals and visitors alike. Barking Town Square won the prestigious 5th European Prize for Urban Public Space - "awarded to projects which foster the process of recovering the public dimension of urban spaces in Europe, as well as their capacity for social inclusion and democracy-building in our cities" . Barking Town Square, designed by muf architecture, was declared winner by Jury from 176 entries from a total of 26 European Countries! It was the very first project winning this prestigious prize 🏆 in the UK. 6,000 sq T-Shaped Town Square has four key elements - a civic square, an arboretum, a folly wall and an arcade - each element seems to be independent of each other but seamlessly link together bringing in a stunning community civic space. The Square is flanked by Barking Town Hall, Heritage Folly, Barking Learning Centre (hosting Barking Library, Citizens Advice, University of East London), Axe Street Health Centre and Abbey Leisure Centre. The Square has become a favourite space for community events, seasonal events & activities, fairs, festivals, sports, creative market, flag-events by the Town Hall, Arts Open Theatre and what not....... THE CIVIC SQUARE The civic square is a beautiful traffic-free flexible space furnished with pale pink benches on a floor of pink Spanish Granite. It is a place where children play, families spend time enjoying the aesthetics on their way of accessing public services or shopping or Doctors...... THE HERITAGE FOLLY It is the most dramatic, interesting, exquisite and artistic feature of the Barking Town Square. It gives an authentic impression of a historic Ruins - remains of an important building. But it is far from a Ruins - it is an artwork hosting & displaying historic fabric of Barking and Dagenham "featuring 19th Century architectural salvage built by master bricklayers and apprentices of Barking College and planted with indigenous species it stands as a memento-mori to this current cycle of regeneration." THE ARCADE Walking through this arcade is really exciting, fun and entertaining regardless whether it is first time or 1000 times! ☺ It stands out with its black & white terrazzo floor tiles and Large Diamond Chandeliers hanging from the top. The Arcade was designed carefully to reflects the grandeur of arcades and the paths of the London's Edwardian Villas. THE ARBORETUM It is located alongside the Arcade between two tall buildings. It looks like a small forest. Only when you look deeper- mystical artistic features start to appear - 40 mature trees of 16 different species along with colourful lights that change according to the time of the years!
