On Friday 25 and Saturday 26 March I attended a 2 day 1:1 wood turning course with Colin Norgate RPT near Petersfield in Hampshire. I am a complete novice who had only turned wood before once on a pole lathe. Colin provided me with very considered personal tuition over the two days that saw me successfully turn a bowl on an electric lathe from a rough ash blank and a simple (but over-sized) spurtle (for porridge stirring) from oak. I was introduced to the two different lathes he uses in his workshop and taught how to use a variety of different turning and smoothing tools. I was also patiently tutored in the importance of being aware of the grain in the wood, working with the grain, turning techniques and finishing. It was an extremely enjoyable 2 day course and I felt that I learned an enormous amount in a relatively short space of time. I also felt that my turning skills developed considerably under Colin's guidance - especially on Day 2. I would highly recommend Colin Norgate to anyone interested in trying wood turning for the first time or in developing their skills. Chris Service: Woodworking

1 Day Woodturning Course Having inherited a lathe 25 years after last doing any turning, my wife bought me a 1 day course with Colin to give me the confidence to use the machine. Colin is a fantastic tutor, who talked me through each step of turning a bowl, allowing me to find my way back into tools and techniques. The approach felt tailored to help me get the best out of the day. Colin observed and allowed me to persevere, but was always present ready to step in and propose a tweak to technique or give a helpful suggestion when I’d made a mistake. Having completed an ash bowl, I rounded out the day with some between centres turning. Colin is a true craftsman and his tuition gave me the confidence and knowledge to come home and employ the training on my own lathe. This was a really enjoyable day and whether you are just wanting to try something new, return to something you’ve not done since school or refine your skills, I highly recommend Colin.

Our brief to Colin was to design a substantial bespoke bookcase to fit under our staircase. He produced a design and suggested making it out of birch and sycamore with stop chamfered edges and adjustable shelving. During construction we had several visits from Colin to discuss the finer details. When installed all measurements were spot on. Colin very carefully was able to secure the complete unit to the wall with one cleverly concealed screw! Needless to say we are absolutely delighted with the finished job. Colin is a very professional and talented craftsman with many years of experience and we highly recommend him if you want a bespoke piece of furniture that will last for decades.
