I worked here as a tour guide in the 1990s up until it was closed to the public in 2001. A fantastic, atmospheric and very spooky place, but the history of its origin and of the area is wonderful to know. The original Clerkenwell Prison stood here from 1616, but the underground remaining cells (pictured) are from the House of Detention, built in the 1830s. Where men, women and children were detained whilst waiting to be trialed at the Old Sessions House round the corner. By the 1890s it was demolished to make way for The Huge Middleton School, which was eventually turned into luxury homes, but the the underground tunnels remain and go right under the school and branch off into unknown areas...but that's a another story!
