Bolton Priory is a fantastic place to visit if you love history, nature, and fun. It is a beautiful church and monastery that dates back to the 12th century, when it was founded by the Augustinian order. You can see the amazing Gothic architecture and the impressive ruins of the monastery, which was closed by King Henry VIII in 1539. You can also walk along the River Wharfe and enjoy the stunning views of the Yorkshire Dales. The river has a narrow and dangerous part called the Strid, where the water flows very fast. There are lots of things to do for kids and adults at Bolton Priory, like playing on the pirate ship, watching a show at the outdoor theatre, or carving a pumpkin at the pumpkin trail. You can also have a tasty meal or a drink at the Cavendish Pavilion, a charming café by the river. Bolton Priory is a great place to visit with your family or friends. You will have a wonderful time and make lasting memories at this historic and scenic site.

Adjacent to a bend in the River Wharfe there is a place of exquisite beauty and atmosphere. The priory is situated in the most idyllic surroundings the county of Yorkshire can offer. A combination of sylvan hills and distant high moorland with the gaunt gothic monument offering silent but eloquent witness both to the creativity and religious fervour that built it and to the monstrous, callous greed of the person who caused its ruin. If you visit this part of Wharfedale you will find a divine corner of England where it is quite sufficient just to be. The Priory Church of Saint Mary and Saint Cuthbert remains intact thanks to the foresight of Prior Moone who separated the nave from the ruined choir by building the East Wall thus preserving the right of the local people to worship here after Dissolution in 1539. The nave features the Pugin stained glass windows and the rebuilt East wall is decorated with the five Madonna lillies alternating with six symbolic plants: Barley, Olive, Vine, Passion Flower and Rose.
