I saw the Chichester Festival Theatre production of Stephen Sondheim's "Assassins" today, a wildly uneven, occasionally macabre, musical musing on the motivations of some of those who throughout history have killed - or tried to kill - American Presidents. This show, essentially a chamber piece, only works if the staging doesn't undermine the pacing. The staging here was a wholly unconvincing and confused mash up of tacky and cheap Americana, the American National Convention Hall, and rolling TV news. It made the pacing funereal and removed all subtlety and nuance from Sondheim's score, which was performed here, without obvious connection or enjoyment, by bored looking musicians whose faces we could see from the audience. The book for this show by John Weidman is especially problematic as it lifts so few of the on-stage killers or wannabes off the page. For me, only Amy Booth-Steel as Moore, possibly the most incompetent gunslinger ever to attempt the take down of an American President (Gerald Ford), made her character come alive. The director of this show, who was responsible for some of the most queasily uncomfortable and inappropriate interactions I have ever seen staged between cast and audience, needs to go - and soon - on whatever HR training the Chichester Festival Theatre should deem appropriate.

This has to be the jewel in the South. The venue is magnificent. There is not a single seat where you have a poor view of the stage in both venues. And where else could you see a West End bound production for £10?

As a community venue this is a gorgeous and welcoming one. Lovely cafe with pizzas available and street food options in summer. The cafe is also a community warm/cool space with WiFi and children's toys and play space. The buildings are stunning echoes of royal festival hall in London. Wide range of productions and the youth theatre is brilliant

Fairly local to me although not been in years. Saw the publicity for Assassins and was intrigued. What a show! Bold, weird, provocative, at times very uncomfortable and then laugh out loud funny. First rate production- kudos to the cast, musicians, staging and lighting technicians (a LOT of red, white and blue!) - totally nailed the American vibe. Totally polarised opinion in our group. However, it had us discussing for the best part of an hour afterwards. And that is exactly what high calibre art always does. Long may this continue! My only two constructive criticisms are any clear lack of certfication/ age rating and reasons why (Assassins would be a clear '15') and that the acoustics were a bit off for me (granted we were in the cheaper seats)- loud sections far too loud and shrill. Realise now what I have been missing and looking forward to The Sound of Music next!

Chichester Festival Theatre is beautiful. There isn't a bad seat in the house. There are 2 cafes in the entrance and a particularly good reasonably priced restaurant on site. The theatre is set in parkland which is very pleasant in good weather. The shows are varied and attract many well-known actors. The shows often go on to the west end. Chichester town is within walking distance and is very attractive.

Sondheim's Assassins Saturday matinee. Excellent. Disappointed we couldn't eat in the Brasserie though...although there were loads of tables. Had to sit outside on the grass with a pretty disappointing pre packed sandwich from the cafe.. would not recommend.
