The purpose of a retreat center is to foster quiet, rest and contemplation. The Carmelite Priory does that job very well. They understand and respect a persons need to be in solitude for reflection and contemplation. The food is very good, though one should not expect a hot breakfast. Cereal and toast are the breakfast fare. The coffee, though instant, isn't bad and there is ample tea (it is England, after all). The grounds and surroundings are wonderful for walks for either exercise, exploration or contemplation. Just off the property and past a sheep pasture, in the afternoon, when the light is right, is a great view of the dreaming spires of Oxford. The price is reasonable but getting there may require a taxi if you, like I, travel without a car. Go there and be renewed.

Don't go down Chilswell Lane (unless you want to walk the last 300m)! The parking is actually on the same road as Youlbury Scout Camp (and it is clearly signposted once you get near). Google Maps has correctly labelled the Carmelite Book service; the Priory is in the same place!
