It is a lovely setting - I was visiting with a relative. The graves are well-maintained, and the grass was cut. The paths enabled the visit to go smoothly.

Meet Joseph Conrad, Orlando Bloom's father, and Parkinson of Parkinson's law fame resting here. This is a lovely, peaceful cemetery, full of daffodils in the spring and cyclamen in the autumn. You will find a map of the cemetery at the North entrance, but the one at the Southern entrance seems to have gone missing. See the photo here for a copy of the map. Joseph Conrad, the Polish/English author of Heart of Darkness which was later adapted to make the film Apocalypse Now is buried here in section N. Just to the right of Conrad's grave is that of Orlando Bloom's stepfather Harry Bloom, the anti-apartheid novelist. On the other site of the pathway, opposite Conrad (about 5 yards) is the gravestone of Thomas Byrne VC, won at the battle of Omdurman in 1898. North of the war graves in section XM, you will find the gravestone of Cyril Northcote Parkinson, famous for Parkinson's Law: "Work expands to fill the time available for its completion". And not far from Parkinson's grave, lies the beautiful grave of a Jedi knight in section T next to section V and right next to the footpath. In section B, to the West of the Chapel, you will find a large silver lime tree (see the accompanying picture) which was planted to commemorate General Gordon shortly after he was killed in 1885, at the siege of Khartoum (there is a film on this with Charlton Heston as Gordon). Sadly, the tree seems to have now lost its label. To the West of the chapel there is a moderately giant redwood (see photo). There is a cross of sacrifice (see photo) to honour soldiers killed in WW1. The cemetery was opened in 1871 and the Remembrance Chapel itself is a double chapel with an imposing 110 feet tall spire. The architect, John Green Hall (1835-1887) also designed the Catholic church in Burgate, Canterbury (1875) and the Congregational church (1877).

Well kept and respected, which is important for those visiting it as a cemetery. For other visitors it can either be an oasis of calm, a place of unusually interesting memorials and burials, or a safe place to walk/run for health.

Here you can visit the grave of one of the twentieth century's greatest writers, Joseph Conrad. The cemetery also has a handsome Victorian chapel. A tranquil place that is still in use.

While this doesn't compare to some of the famous cemeteries of Paris or London, it it worth visiting. The mock gothic chaprl gives the place character and Joseph Conrad's grave is often adorned with trinkets and candles from visitors.
