I booked Britania Fish Bar in Mile End for a late (1pm) Saturday lunch with the girls. Don’t be fooled by the exterior, this was a fantastic place to get your seafood fix in London and the ambience and classy decorations reminded us of wining and dining on the devon coast during the summer holidays with our families. THE FOOD We started with salt cod croquettes and some Camembert and for the main shared octopus, crab, mussels and fries x2 which was plenty for the four of us. Octopus was perfectly cooked but the mussels were the star of the show. After finishing them we threw the fries into the mussel sauce , which albeit a little uncivilised for a classy establishment like this, did actually taste quite good. You don’t want all those juices to go to waste! THE DRINKS We ordered tap water, one glass of sparkling water and a bottle of Chardonnay to wash down all the feesh. The chippy was good to serve it at a cool rather than ferociously chilled temperature. About 11-13 degrees I would say. We went for chardonnay as it’s not too rich or cloying and it’s light minerality and semi sweetness makes it a perfect accompaniment to the light seafood lunch we found ourselves tucking into. All in all 5 stars thanks for a great lunch bill was slightly more expensive than your regular chippy but cost of living crisis means we expected higher prices.
