FAQ

What type of blood products do you offer and do you have them readily available?

We offer a wide range of blood products including red blood cells, platelets, plasma, and cryoprecipitate. We strive to maintain a sufficient supply of these products at all times to meet the needs of our patients.

What are the requirements for donating blood and how often can one donate?

To donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 50kg, and be in good health. You must also not have donated blood in the last 12 weeks. After your first donation, you can donate every 16 weeks.

What steps do you take to ensure the safety and quality of the blood supply?

We follow strict screening and testing procedures to ensure the safety and quality of our blood supply. Donors are screened for various medical conditions and lifestyle factors that could put the recipient at risk. Additionally, every unit of blood is tested for infectious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis.

Are there any fees associated with blood donations or receiving blood products?

No, there are no fees associated with donating blood. Similarly, if you need blood products, you will not be charged for them as long as you are a UK resident and the products are being used in an NHS hospital.

How do you handle and respond to adverse reactions or complications from blood transfusions?

Although rare, adverse reactions to blood transfusions can occur. Our staff are trained to identify and manage these reactions quickly and effectively. We have procedures in place to ensure that the appropriate medical interventions are taken to address any complications that may arise. If necessary, we will also investigate the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Such a great experience at Bristol Donor Centre. First time donating and the whole process couldn’t have been easier. Free parking right outside so you don’t have to worry about walking for miles or paying pricey parking fees. The staff are so lovely, warm and informative. Everything is explained to you and it’s just an easy pain free experience. Plus the snacks are fab. Will definitely be a regular blood donor now, thanks for the experience.
