What a delight to experience Jay's 8 week Jazz Harmony and Theory course. He is passionate about his art, which is also totally a science with a logic and complexity that can bend most brains! Jay is a mixture of total positivity, knowledge, talent, enthusiasm and encouragement, with the ability to present intricate, detailed information in bite sized pieces with growing complexity...and always with patience and a sense of fun and good humour. I was totally inspired by Jay and the other course participants with our first 'assignment'. I recorded 4 tracks of the piece on garage band. I had never used garage band before, not picked up the guitar in a year and not played the sax in decades; piano and voice are more familiar. The process was inspiring and educational. I managed to get an online guitar lesson and found a lovely local sax teacher. The result was not 'pretty' though I did it and it was totally inspiring, educational and fun. Next to improve the improv! Thanks so much Jay, I can't wait to do more courses and lessons with you.

I did Jay’s Jazz Harmony Course in 2021. I had done a little reading around music theory but basically I didn’t know much. Jay is an extremely knowledgeable musician and is able to easily convey information to participants of varied experience. A lot of information is packed into the 8 weeks, so more seasoned musicians can build on their knowledge and relative newcomers (like myself) get a good insight into music theory. Our knowledge was progressively built on each week and we had the opportunity to put it into practice, if we wished, by performing to the group. Don’t expect an easy ride because this is a serious course, professionally run and most certainly value for money. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I got the odd headache but learned a lot and met some lovely fellow musicians. Jay is a great teacher. I totally recommend this course and I eagerly await his next one.

Sixteen hours of tuition including aural training, simple through to complex chords and melodies, written jazz standards for any instrumentalist, tailored backing tracks, musical scores and demonstrations from the piano. Jay conveys the heritage of jazz music within wider musical history and related to varied traditions. The contributions of all course members were encouraged.

I have so enjoyed Jay's Jazz Harmony course, and learned such a lot from his teaching. The course was a perfect blend of theory and performance, and we were challenged and encouraged in everything we did. Jay is very generous with backup materials, both for the theory and also for accompaniments for solo playing, so we can keep working with these now the course has ended. Jay is an excellent teacher and communicator, and a brilliant pianist, and he made the whole experience really enjoyable as well as inspiring us all to work hard !! I look forward to his next workshop.

I thoroughly enjoyed the jazz harmony course. As a single-note instrument player (saxophone) it opened up new avenues for constructing improvisations; the jazz chords sound so gorgeous - 7ths 9ths 11ths 13ths. A veritable feast (like the mole's first picnic on the river with the water rat in the Wind in the Willows). I'm going to pick up the guitar again soon to try out some of the chords. Also, very useful for considering composition: I feel better placed to create my own pieces now. Lots of challenge, but in the most supportive environment, where it's more than ok to ask questions and to experiment. Jay is generous with his time where extra help is needed, and provides copious high quality learning materials and exercises: these I will be coming back to for further inspiration over the next few months. Jay is the most encouraging and gifted music teacher I have worked with.
