Nice hotel in unique location. Unfortunately their top restaurant was closed for renovation and only Smith's was opened. The Smith's is nice for cosy relaxed lunch, but it is not enough for a proper occasion dinner. The main hotel bar is nice and they have good menu, but there is always room for improvement. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. The staff is very friendly and professional, thank you! SPA is not big and fully booked well in advance. The hotel is used for functions and weddings, beware. If there is function than the staff is busy with it and you may feel excluded. The library is very cosy with a fire place. Books are mostly from Norfolk library, not very good condition, but it is still interesting. We went to clay shooting - that was amaizing! Gin and cider tour is OK, but nothing really to taste. Though fresh apple juice was good! There are walking paths around the hotel. Beautiful! Nearby activities: Try clay shooting - you will not regret!

Tl;dr: facilities awesome, food in restaurant hit and miss, lodge food terrible, lodges need work and very expensive for the experience We stayed in a lodge, which means a few differences to staying in the hotel proper, the main ones being the food, which can be ordered the day before and delivered to your lodge. This was a big draw as we had a toddler with us, and this meant everyone could eat together. Starting with the good: The grounds are stunning. They are everything you could possibly want - croquet, tennis, beautiful walks, boule etc. See the pictures The staff were downright impressive. Always attentive, polite, and helpful. Even knowing details of our dinner just by being told the lodge number The facilities and included things were great for families and just adults with multiple rooms to relax and get a drink, chickens and ferrets to feed in the morning (free and with a very knowledgeable talk too!) And golf of course (none of us play! Sorry!) There is also a children's room - under 5s, we think. This was incredible. Obviously recently done (visited May 2023) with great toys and space which really helped us. This wasn't free but I think £15 a day or £40 for the duration of your stay. Worth it. Now the bad: The food in the lodge was... edible. That's as positive as I can be. There was, for 4 people, always enough for twice that many. It's just no one really wanted to eat it. And for £20+ per person that's a shame The lodge was also in need of some love - the floors creaked incredibly loudly so if anyone in the downstairs rooms was asleep... they aren't any more. There was a light bulb flickering and a slightly distressing leak on the ceiling seeming to come from the toilet.. That said it was setup to be at least toddler tolerant (the stairs had stair gates and there was nothing too dangerous in their reach). The meh We ate in the restaurant one night. I had the special which was lovely and my wife had the ravioli which was very oily. All in all the lodge was pretty expensive and in need of a bit of tlc (especially given it was May so the start of the season) and the lodge food was dire. Everything else went well!

As a treat for the whole team from Radiance Aesthetic Clinic we came to Bovey Castle for a three course Sunday lunch and drinks. From arrival we were blown away by the staff, we were made to feel very welcome and looked after. The food was superb, all three courses were amazing and drinks were flowing. Afterwards we sat outside to enjoy a sundowner and again the service was excellent. Thank you Bovey Castle for looking after our team so well and giving them a well deserved treat!
