In 2019 I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. I was 55yrs old when given this diagnosis. I spent 11 months being pushed from pillar to post by the NHS. I was pushed away from the surgical route and did not want radiotherapy because this can and often cause long term problems. Prostate cancer is not nice. I managed to find Mr. Alan Doherty through a Coventry surgeon during Covid and when no referrals could be made. It changed my life and I’m so glad I found this man. He is a brilliantly gifted surgeon and an exceptional warm friendly individual. Not a shred of arrogance like some I’ve met. Read of his profiles and what other urologists say about this man. It’s all true. Alan Doherty only performs open radical prostatectomies now, he has undertaken robotic and laparoscopic surgery (in the past) but chose open surgery because the outcomes were significantly better. He attracts patients from all over the world (which speaks volumes). He has undertaken thousands of open surgeries. Mr Doherty publishes all his own results for patients and surgeons to see. You will struggle to find any results for robotic surgical prostatectomies, possibly because the outcomes and results are worse than Mr. Doherty. Open surgery is far better when done by a skilled surgeon because you only remove the organ as opposed to taking wider margins (including most of the nerves, which help with continence and other functions). I had open surgery x3 weeks after speaking with Mr Doherty (May 2020) and was completely dry x3 days after the catheter was removed. I remain so now x3 months post op with no problems whatsoever thanks to this surgeon. He and his team are exceptional, my cancer has gone completely and most of my nerves have been spared thanks to this man’s skill. Mr Doherty is a relaxed individual, he is positive and enthusiastic all the time and comes across as an exceptionally clever man. He explains everything and above all he is honest and sincere about treatments. He takes pride in patients outcomes and quality of life above all things. Sure this type of surgery can be expensive when paying privately but the outcomes and results from this surgeon are exceptional which is what you want. Mr. Doherty is not responsible for all the costs which are set by others and costs cover, hospital stays, anaesthetics, theatre time, nursing care, drug charges, physiotherapy care, complex blood analysis and much much more so putting this into perspective, how much money do you put on being cancer free with hardly any problems post surgery. I would say to any man with prostate cancer of any stage. Don’t despair, don’t loose heart. This surgeon is immensely gifted, skilled, kind, honest and caring and you would be mad not to speak to him. I am testimony that as a patient who was told I had almost inoperable cancer and would certainly end up almost completely incontinent the NHS got it so wrong. Mr. Doherty cured me with the best outcome.

I was recommended this clinic by a friend who’d had a prostatectomy done by Mr Doherty a few years back. My procedure was the green light laser treatment which has been a complete success but the main reason for this review is to thank all the staff I came into contact with for the excellent care that I received. From the person that took my bloods, to the staff who delivered my food, to the ladies on reception and of course the amazing Mr Doherty - who's calm and considered approach made me feel instantly at ease and in safe hands. I couldn’t recommend this hospital enough.

During August of last summer 2019, whilst researching an alternative option to the ‘TRUS Biopsy’ I came across the excellent, highly informative ‘Birmingham Prostate Clinic’ ( BPC ) Website and in particular information regarding the ‘Template Biopsy’ offered by Alan Doherty and his team, which I discovered to my great relief is considered the gold standard in ‘Prostate Cancer’ diagnosis. Shortly after that I met Mr Doherty for the first time to discuss my medical history and suitability for the procedure. As I look back now over the last 6 months, having had a ‘Template Biopsy’ and a very successful ‘Open Radical Prostatectomy’ under Mr Doherty’s care; I’ve realised that first meeting with him proved to be, not only inspirational but a fundamental turning point for me and my positive state of mind going forward with diagnosis and surgery. Also, on every single occasion during that time I have found Mr Doherty to be the consummate professional in every capacity from his highly articulate and concise delivery to his brilliance as a surgeon and compassionate and caring approach through out. Also the pre and post operative protocol which he and his excellent team have worked so hard to develop over the years, is second to non and in my experience if you follow it carefully you will help yourself immeasurably. I am just amazed at how quickly and well I’ve recovered from the operation and its only been a little over 11 weeks and of course I’m under no illusions that is also down to Mr Doherty’s immense skill as a surgeon. Obviously, as good as Mr Doherty is, he also needs a great team of people around him and I can quite happily say hand on heart that everyone I have had the pleasure of meeting during my visits and admissions at ( BPC ) Spire Parkway - from the anaesthetist to the theatre staff the postoperative care, ward nurses, physiotherapist’s, advanced nurse practitioners and the administration team; every single one of them has set an exemplary standard of care that the hospital should be justifiably proud of. The title ‘Centre of Excellence’ is well deserved and hard one by everybody at the ( BPC ). In summary - I cannot thank Mr Doherty and the staff at the ‘Birmingham Prostate Clinic’ enough, I owe them all a debt I can never possibly repay.

I am six months on from the Prostatectomy performed by Alan Doherty which successfully cured my Prostate Cancer and I cannot adequately express how brilliantly Alan and his team were throughout. Excellent diagnosis, reassuring delivery of the results/options for treatment, a flawless operation, a positive stay in hospital and fine post operative care. Due to all his great work and advice, Mr Doherty has enabled me to recover much faster than I could have expected - I was walking five miles a day within three weeks and (after consultation) back to distance running at three months. Some may consider Mr Doherty's explanation of the diagnosis, the operation and possible outcomes as 'blunt and direct'. I prefer to describe it as 'practical and succinct' which (unlike many other consultants) gave me great confidence and reassurance. He prepared my wife and I for every likely scenario, both good and bad we appreciated being well informed about every step of the process even if that meant being told of potential risks. Mr Doherty's compassionate and diligent approach made every step crystal clear and logical. Six months on and I have never been more grateful for the Birmingham Prostate Clinic and their excellent work. So much anxiety could have been avoided if I could have met Mr Doherty sooner.

Unfortunately, we did not find Mr Alan Doherty to be sufficiently professional in his approach. He did not have important results ready at the appointment, and his general laid back demeanour would have suited the pub better than the surgery. Worst of all, he referred in quite a casual way to a possible terminal prognosis for which there was no conclusive evidence at that stage; this caused my wife and I to be very upset. I will not criticise him for the fact that the prostate cancer which he anticipated (and which the initial tests requested by him indicated) was not present, as this is acceptable within the constraints of medical diagnosis. So the story had a happy ending. But the way he conducted himself generally made more difficult to take the fact that we suffered several weeks of anxiety over a possible bad prognosis. We also had the feeling that the references to possible negative outcomes represented implicit pressure to spend a lot of money on private care; in fact, we returned to the NHS, and everything was resolved.
