Coffee shop staff very helpful. However, depth and type of gravel on the pathways makes use of a manual wheelchair virtually impossible. Unlikely to visit again for this reason.

Thoughtfully designed and well-manicured gardens that were awash in a sea of pale blue forget-me-not flowers when I visited. The beds and boarders were artfully filled with a careful collection, often featuring a flowering shrub surrounded by contrasting blooms or foliage and it was evident that what was to come had already been planned, as evidenced by flower-stalks pushing upward. Although the show will change and might even be better later in summer, I enjoyed my visit in the spring (10 May) as everything was bright green and growing rapidly and the air had a perfume whose source I couldn't locate. Then the birds were in full song an several types of butterfly were aflight. I was surprised to see the size of many of the oak trees which provide structure and shelter to the garden - the must have been incorporated by Beth, as they clearly pre-date her time. There was water as well, at the heart, trickling slowly between levels and nurturing a wide variety of marginal plant, many still in spring growth. The planting of the Woodland Garden was much more naturalistic, with sunlit glades appearing in spots between areas of mature trees with their shade-tolerant understory. A very peaceful place to have my sandwich, although there was a picnic area outside. There seemed to be a large variety of plants in use throughout the different areas of the garden, though none looked out of place - a testimony to Beth Chatto's gardening philosophy!
