Thomas Pearson
I decided to ring Belgarum Music Publishing in order to find out about music shops within the Hampshire area that sell violin strings, since I am a beginner vioinist and would need use of new strings regularly due to accidentally snapping them when tuning my violin et cetera. I did not want to ring any music shops straight away, as I was hoping for some 'insider knowledge' of those 'in the know' who could give me some good advice, or tell me of any smaller independent stores that may not be as prolific online as larger ones. This was absolutely not what I got. The man who answered the phone did not even introduce himself or the company; just a rather blunt and tired 'hello', to which I asked him if he could tell me of any music shops. The conversation began to turn sour simply because I wanted to find out this perfectly reasonable information. He persistently called me 'sir' in a sneakly provocative and patronising manner, with a snide undertone to his every response. I said that since Kimbers Music has closed in Fareham, is there anywhere nearby which is walkable (I live in Fareham), to which he replied, again in a snide and provocative manner "oh does anyone walk these days sir?" He then told me about a music shop in Romsey called Hayes Music Limited, to which I gave some interest, and said something like "yes that sounds good", to which he said, again in the same way "oh Romsey is an awfully long way to walk from Fareham sir". I said that Music Shops are becoming far and few between these days, again he just kept at it: "oh but there are three in Southampton, one in Romsey, you know sir Hampshire is a very densely populated area, there has to be some". I called him out on his sly rudeness, and he asked me who I was ringing, to which I said 'Belgarum in Eastleigh', to which he said "do you even know who you are ringing, sir?" I had had enough. I put the phone down because this is quite frankly appalling behaviour which was completely unprovoked and unnecessary. I do hope he was having a very bad day and this was a one-off, otherwise goodness help him in talking to people who take an intereest in music in general and want to find out some perfectly reasonable information. It turns out this man is actually so-called Professor Timothy A Norris, the "Founder and Headteacher of the Winchester Music School" (he made it a necessity to spell it out in his personal message to me, since he afterwards messaged my number - a stranger to him - via SMS), and called me out on my rudeness (!) for putting the phone down on him afer HIS appalling behaviour! I think if he indeed is who he says he is, then he really needs to grow the hell up and start talking to people with respect, and not chase strangers' on their mobile telephones because of his own foul temperament. Despicable. Avoid this company at all costs.
