Exchanging paper money tips: - If it's for less than £300, you can exchange old bank notes at some Post Offices (the wait for the Bank of England counter is so long, you should consider doing this first; google which Post Offices do this to save yourself a lot of time) If you need to exchange old paper money over £300 at the Bank of England: - Arrive between 8:30-9am for the fastest service (it took me a total of one hour waiting and being served). I tried to go at 11am another day and all slots until 3pm were filled - You must have an official form of ID (passport, driver's license) **AND** a proof of address (council tax, bank statement, utility bill) - They can only give you cash or do a BACS transfer into your bank account; they can't do a mix of both. - They don't accept any old pound coins (the old ones that are only gold-coloured without the silver centre). You can donate it at the counter to one of their selected charities (one was WWF) All the people working there I encountered were all helpful and from an average disposition to very kind and funny.
