The Balkerne Gate was built by the Romans & marked the main Western entrance into Colchester. In their time it would have been sentried & a checkpoint regarded with some importance, considering that the town was their capital. It's location today does suffer somewhat from the vicinity of the main road & surrounding buildings. Just try to remember that the red-brick gateway is actually the best part of 2 millennia old...

Largely destroyed, I am a londoner, and although I have lived in Colchester for 25 years, I recall seeing this wall when I was about six or seven, it appears much smaller. It would though!
