This occurred today. After shopping for some large and awkward DIY and decorating items, my partner and I wanted to take our trolley to a manned checkout, at which another customer was completing their transaction. We moved our trolley in line to be next at the checkout. However, a member of staff arrived and curtly insisted that we use a self-service checkout. We said that we had decided to use the regular staffed checkout, but we were again pressured to use the self-service checkout. We reluctantly did so, but we are pensioners,each with mobility issues and the nature of our purchases made it difficult to put through the self service checkout ourselves. We agreed that the staffed checkout would be far easier for us. While we were struggling with our items, our scanner handset failed twice and had to be reset by another staff member. All the while this was happening, the staffed checkout was still operating. We had assumed that the customer still had a choice of which checkout to use in a store. Disappointing service. Better staff training, please.
