I knew of many of Amy Johnson’s achievements, amongst them, in 1930, becoming the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia, but I never knew how/when she died. This lovely bronze statue overlooking Herne Bay commemorates this sad event but is also a tribute to her life. On 5 January 1941, while flying an Airspeed Oxford for the ATA from Prestwick via RAF Squires Gate to RAF Kidlington near Oxford, Johnson went off course in adverse weather conditions. Reportedly out of fuel, she bailed out of her aircraft into the Thames Estuary near Herne Bay. Despite her parachute being spotted by a naval convoy she could not be rescued and her body was never recovered. An identical statue was installed in her birth town of Hull.
