I passed this restaurant a couple of years ago and remembered it when booking a Mothers Day lunch as it looked like somewhere nice to take my mum. They had a 4 course special menu (£42) for the day so was ideal. The outside of the hotel/restaurant needs a bit of a tidy up, there's stacked up dining furniture outside, some tables were up but seem to be strewn all over, some had full ashtrays. Not the best first impression. You walk into the hotel reception firstly which was confusing - I wasn't sure if where I had to go or who I needed to be seated by, so happened to go the right way and find the restaurant doors. The decoration is ok, it's Essex bling with decent quality, comfortable furniture. We were sat directly next to the waiting table with the menus and computer on, which felt too close. It was distracting hearing every conversation the staff were having - including swearing - not what you would want or expect from a semi-high end establishment. The menu was really good for a set one, a good amount of choice for any tastes and diets. Each course came in good time, was pretty tasty and overall good value.

Very disappointed with my dining experience. Only 1 waiter meaning service was extremely slow. Food was good, but it was not £70 a head good. Infact the prices are absolutely extraordinary they’re charging top London prices for above average food in Southend. It’s no wonder the dining room was empty. It cast a cloud over my entire stay as I felt I was ripped off. I Will not be returning. Which is a shame because the hotel rooms were lovely.

Extremely disappointed with out Valentines meal. We came here last year fir my joint birthday/mothers day. Food was amazing as were the staff. Which is why we booked again. Last nights experience had it been out 1st we most certainly would not have booked again. Service Extremely slow even though same amount of staff/guests as last year. Food I'd give 3/10 Starters tempura prawn cocktail had no flavour. Mains we're so fatty I ate none of the meat. Spoonful of mash . Teaspoon size piece of cauliflower and the plate full of I can only describe as congealed gravy. Desert had more flavour but pastry so hard we only had spoons. I had to pick up yo eat. Ordered extr drink. 24 minutes later asked again. Previous server hadn't bothered. We were put in the corner where it was so cold nd drafty I had to put my coat on. Heard lots of customers grumbling Be aware before you spend your money

Food was served luke warm / cold. Coffee was poor. Glasses, cutlery and tables were dirty and not clean. Bacon was thick and dried out. Food was not seasoned well either. You're better going to the Molo Lounge to get a decent (similar) style breakfast.

Food, was amazing, service, was amazing, layout and decor is also very classy. Price is not too steep either. Since my first visit I've been a few times and it seems they refresh their menu with different dishes and desserts quite frequently. It's a bit sad when a favourite disappears but they always come with quality so you won't be disappointed with what comes next.

Visited tonight for a meal, actually more an experience, the place is more West End than Southend on sea , the staff were warm and welcoming especially the maitre d Jonathon and the atmosphere was relaxed. The food was on a different level, imaginative and tasty, small menu which I prefer as all fresh and focused on, but I found it hard to make a choice as it all looked and sounded so good. I went with the special which was a squid and crab ravioli in a rich seafood and tomato sauce - followed by a sublime cote du boeuf - finished with a , yes pineapple tarte tatin which was melt in your mouth good. I asked to meet the chefs which was Luke and Ross as I had to just say a big thank you, lovely couple of guys and super talented. Thank you Aurum will definitely be returning soon.

Not for vegans. Many of the items on the 'vegan menu' are not in fact vegan as they contain milk, and despite being a pricey and upscale restaurant with a dedicated vegan menu, the vegan dishes lacked creativity, ambition, and most importantly, taste. The service however was overall great and the staff was friendly and professional.
