The car park was very busy which gave a good indication of the status of the house. We were greeted by friendly NT staff and walked for about 10 minutes through woodland gardens to the house. The volunteers were extremely approachable and the visit was made more enjoyable by a couple of slightly eccentric guides. Access was given to over 80% of the house. The rooms generally were small with the exception of the magnificent library where strategically placed mirrors enhanced the grandeur of the setting. The house was packed with an eclectic mix of extremely valuable collectables including artworks by Constable, tapestries, furniture, jade, bronzes, books and silverware. Items to look out for are Nelson's hair, General Gordon's silver liquorice case and the cat atop the pillar at the bottom of the wide staircase. Allow about 2 hours for a visit to the house and gardens. One of the NTs gems. Not to be missed.
