My mother was in Amarna House from 2013 to 2015, so things may have changed now, hopefully for the better. Their maintenance man at that time was a crook who stole personal electrical items off residents. He did this by PAT-testing them and claiming they were dangerous and needed scrapping. Mum had an immaculate 1976 flip-display clock radio, which we'd had from new, which they said had failed the test and been thrown away. I believe the bent maintenance man kept it for himself and sold it, as they are highly collectable among '70s fanatics and fetch very good money. What should happen with allegedly failed personal electrical items is the home should contact the relative, tell them to remove it from the premises, say what's wrong with it and recommend disposal. I had no idea what had happened until I visited a few weeks later and noticed the clock radio was missing. Mum then told me the story. If it had been binned it would be long gone by then. There were some shocking H&S breaches. I got there one day and saw the HC1/Avery (ownership changed while mum was there) minibus parked on a pavement AND blocking a fire exit. The consequences of such stupid behaviour if there'd been a fire don't bear thinking about. Food was cheap and nasty. Mum was used to wholemeal bread, but most sandwiches were white bread. Staff were mostly good, apart from the criminal doing maintenance. Mum and some other women residents were unnerved by the occasional use of agency staff, when 'strange men' would go into their rooms. After mum died, Avery were very quick to tell me what the outstanding balance was and told me in no uncertain terms to pay ASAP, but no reminders to pic up her stuff, or arrange to return it to me. I live 210 miles from York, so not a local journey!

3 years since my dad was in this hellish care home. Not enough staff, food horrific, very little activities, minimal help given for eating, I have photographic evidence of the poor quality of food served. 😢

Currently looking at care homes for a parent and visited Amarna house. Was very impressed and it was clear to see how caring the staff were with the residents and the place was spotless. Felt very welcome, Linda the home manager was lovely and more than happy to answer any questions we had.

Amarna House was recommended by a friend who has a family member as a resident there, as I am looking for a home for my father who needs 24hr care. Visited yesterday and was made very welcome on arrival by Linda the home manager. I was given a tour of the home and the rooms available, which were very impressive and spotless. Staff were absolutely wonderful in the interactions I saw with the residents, it was a wonderful friendly atmosphere, and I know my father will be well cared for when he moves in to the home.
