I’d had a few builders out to quote on my plan to remove a newer facade to my fireplace and hopefully find and repair if necessary the original Georgian one beneath. While the quotes I was getting were ok, the grasp on what I wanted as opposed to what they thought I should have, and what it might entail was not. Within minutes of meeting Sam I knew we were on the same page, but more importantly, that I could trust him. As with every part of the renovation of my 18th century cottage things were more complicated than they appear. In removing the facade we did indeed find the original Georgian fireplace, alas it had been botched and butchered by countless generations and presented as an eyesore more than a centrepiece. The oak beam I hoped to find had been replaced with concrete, and there was an enormous ugly repair in grey brick where part of the chimney had collapsed when that was installed. I was disappointed and considered the option of putting a new facade back, but Sam reassured me that his team would be able to dismantle the chimney, salvage as many of the original bricks as possible, source antique replacements where needed and carefully reconstruct it accurately, as it would have originally been. He even drove me to the architectural scrap yard and amongst a forest of planks, boards and beams found an oak beam the perfect size and shape and every bit as old as the house as if he had been led to it by a star. The chimney looks wonderful, just as it would when the house went up in c1790. Every step of the way Sam has spent time with me, guiding me, supporting me (and my first floor while they rebuilt the chimney), and most importantly, listening. Sam and his team are people of skill, patience and principles. They will be doing all my work from now on. Services: Design, Consultation, Remodeling, Project management
