9th June 2023. Flight from Compton Abbas Airfield. The 40 minute flight in Spitfire NH341, with pilot Charlie Brown, flying in such a well maintained iconic aircraft, was a truly magnificent experience and with such an experienced pilot. The whole flying experience is incredibly well run, with everyone involved enthusiastic and extremely professional. It is a very safety conscious and well organised operation. I cannot commend everyone involved more highly. David Mackay. Retired professional pilot.

Aero Legends offer something quite unique in being able to fly in a military jet. I, like many others, have been an aviation enthusiast since my youth and started a PPL course in my early 30s but career and family meant I had to put that on hold. However having turned 70 and seeing what Aero Legends were offering I booked my flight which took place on the 6th June 2023. The process of booking the flight was very straight forward and I received updates by e-mail reminding me of the event and of other options such as an in-cockpit video of the flight and the opportunity to buy more flying time. On the day of my flight I arrived at 09:00 (my flight was at 11:00) and was warmly greeted by the Aero Legends staff as was my wife who came to watch. After registration I was shown a couple of short videos covering the aircraft and safety topics. The focus of these was to highlight that flying in a military jet is very different from other types of flying with some inherent risks. An overview of the operation of the ejector seat then took place followed by practical exercises to go through the procedures and its operation first hand. With this done I was fitted out with my flying suit, helmet and life vest. At this point I met my pilot Sean Chiddention (MBE) who explained the flight plan to me and then took me out to the BA Strikemaster. Two ground staff helped me strap into the cockpit and made sure everything was safe and correct. Sean then joined me and briefed me on the basic layout of the cockpit and explained what we would be doing. The cockpit is compact but not cramped with the large clear bubble canopy providing excellent visibility. Engine start up brings with it the whine and hum which makes one aware of the power of the aircraft. Taxiing out and lining up allowed me time to settle in and take in the cockpit environment. Throughout the flight Sean was constantly informing me and educating me on various aspect of the aircraft and what to expect next. With engines at take-off power noise levels increased and the surface of the runway can be felt until the moment we lifted into the air and from then on the ride was smooth and solid. We headed off on a south easterly track to find a break in the cloud that would allow for some aerobatic maneuvers. Sean carried out several tight turns which demonstrated the effect of G forces on the body. Firstly pulling 3G then another pulling 4G. Following on from this was a demonstration of an aileron roll which I admit took me by surprise and helped to keep the adrenalin levels high. Having found some clear sky we entered into a loop-the-loop maneuver which was an amazing experience as the earth and sky rotate over your head – fantastic. At this point Sean allowed me to take command and guided me through a number of course changes involving turns to the left and right. At this point I was living the dream. To be in control of a military jet doing 5 miles/minute is not something many people get to do. I would never have thought I would be able to experience it. Passing over the Thames estuary we headed back to the airfield where Sean performed a runway flypast exiting with a break turn – that was just pure fun! After landing a photo opportunity was taken to shake hands with Sean who later in the briefing room presented me with a beautiful illustration of the Strikemaster which he signed and added a personalised comment. This was an event I will never forget and one I hope to be able to repeat sometime in the near future.
