All I'll say is adoption must be approached with great caution these days. Local authorities are not exactly transparent about the true needs of the child and the nature of how they ended up being placed for adoption. This then impacts the ability of the adoption social workers of AIM to fulfill they're duties and furthermore, it prevents adopters from being able to have an "eyes wide open" adoption, whereas they have all the relevant facts pertaining to the child and can make an informed decision which is important as once made finalised via an adoption order this decision is life-long. The stem of this problem is rooted in problematic social work practices at Local Authority level, whereby a refusal to provide relevant paperwork to the Agency Medical Advisors, Agency Decision Makers, AIM, and the Adoption Panel, whole decide if we can meet that child's needs. There is a cultural prevalence amongst social workers at Local Authority to avoid getting the child support and assessments the need if this impacts the likelihood they will be placed for said Adoption; which is harmful to the child in both ways, being placed without truly being assessed through critical analysis as to whether they are suitable for adoption and leading to an increase in adoption breakdown statistics, but, secondly refusal to get children assessments and support who need it hinders they ability to thrive in the future; timely support and intervention are critical for children. Due to confidentiality rights I will not state names, but Persons of Interest or POI for short that are related to myself adopted a child through this agency via Sefton; this child, after frequent requests for more information, which was not provided until a subsequent Freedom of Information request, the child turned out to have been born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome; and later in life suspected of Autism (pre-adoption); to which the diagnosis did occur, but only after the adoptive family pursued a private diagnosis due to a lack of support from post-adoption services. The POI's had been told that the child they sought to adopt was happy, healthy, sociable and reciprocal of affection; the reality was far from the truth. The child failed to bond due to the more significant level of needs and lack of support which in turn ultimately left this situation on the path to a placement breakdown; as is with one in five adoptive placements nationwide; this left POI heartbroken. Due to the increasing amount of children awaiting adoptive placements and the decline in adoptive families and the withholding of information by service providers.
