    Avoid using Acumen as much as humanly possible. We were recommended Acumen through a developer and it was the worst part of buying our new house hands down. The Nottingham team are possibly the most inept group of mortgage advisors in the UK. They regularly gave us incorrect information, made assurances they knew they could not keep and consistently disappointed us. They have incredibly poor customer service with little to no updates unless you ring them multiple times a day, staff are forever in "meetings" or "out of the office" . The staff seem to just bluff their way through a deal and hope that everything settles well. We moved to another advisor and got our mortgage approved within 8 days. Acumen wasted our time for 8 weeks making a move before Christmas impossible They are awful, do not feel like you have to use them because they are recommended. Truly truly awful. Especially avoid Ashley Dale not an ounce of knowledge and fed us nothing but lies. Shame really moving into our first home was meant to be so special and it was ruined by Acumen Mortgages!

    In my experience, Jake from Acumen has been fantastic. The advice he offered and the packages he found were of great value. Quite frankly. The explanations of what packages were on offer and the differences between each were extraordinarily helpful. Realistically, I did find the same mortgages on offer via comparison sites. When I compared the two he was more than happy to explain that his software works in much the same way. At no point did he ever try and persuade me otherwise. He was always upfront about any details. That being said, and having gone through the process fully. Without his expertise I would've struggled to get it through as quickly. I wouldn't have had the support of a third party explaining the nuiances of what was on offer, and I wouldn't have selected the best length of time to fully benefit from overpaying. The fee is £200. Normally I'd turn my nose up at this and look else where. I went into it as a bit of a sceptic and quite frankly I was busting his b*lls for that £200. However, in my specific scenario Jake more than paid for himself. Even through my rigerous interrogation he was friendly and courteous. He was even able to pickup on the fact I was unsure and encouraged me to take a little bit more time to reconsider what it was I specifically wanted out of my housing insurance/wage protection etc. The saving he made over what I was looking at were somewhere in the region of £300. So, all things considered I'm £100 better off - not only that but when it came to the insurance side of things the advice really is second to none. You might think "£100, that's not very much." At face value I would agree. However, let's take a step back and consider this the bigger picture and where the true value lies. To set the scene: I would finish work. Sit down on my sofa Infront of my TV. Jake would give me a bell on my phone. Tell me about all the mortgage offers he's found. We'd go through the list and he would ask me what I liked the sound of, I'd tell him some specific requirements. He'd give me some advice based around what I'd want to do and then he'd go away. He'd give me a call back and tell me what they've said on the phone to him and what's on offer. I'd go ahead with it if I liked the sound of it, or if I didn't we'd repeat. So far, I've moved my thumb exactly four times and found multiple mortgage offers. Once to pick up, once to hang up. Once to pickup, and once to hang up. And my backside hasn't moved an inch off that sofa... To put it bluntly. It was absolutely worry and stress free for me. We'd then go through very much the same process for my insurances, any other add-ons like accident and wage protection. So, back to that £100, I've essentially made £100 from listening to someone else do my job for me. I've just got to pick my phone up every once in a while (sometimes I didn't!). We were so happy with the service we've welcomed them to get back in touch with us once our mortgage term ends and we're ready to remortgage. As a side note. As a comparison. My friend who went through a similar process with a free alternative barely started his appointment before the found him a mortgage and wasted no time trying to sell them affiliate insurances which were commission based. The level of service wasn't nearly as personalised as what we received (we even had a WhatsApp group for questions). To quote an old phrase: "If you're getting a free service. You're the product." My advice, based on my experience? Get the impartial advice you want and ask for Jake. There's a reason his name crops up so much in these reviews... Short term. Sure, you can't buy that microwave you wanted. But, long term... Well, it's a long term investment that's guranteed to pay-off (who wouldn't say yes to a £100 payrise a year?).
